Modular Building | A Dune House in Perfect Coexistence with Its Environment
This dune house sits on the dunes of Terschelling Island in the Netherlands and looks like a real dune. That harmonious presence with nature comes from the architects' understanding of the sea, wind, and light in the setting, and from choosing materials that follow the environment's texture and colors. The result is a powerful connection between building and landscape.
Inside, the living levels are staggered. A spiral staircase links the split levels so that different rooms have different orientations and spatial experiences—a distinctive visual-landscape character. Meticulous custom design lets living and environment coexist perfectly.
Using BIM software, modular prefabricated wood panels, a refined passive heat-use strategy, plus solar panels and a biogas fireplace, the project achieves a minimal carbon footprint.
The loft-style house recreates the experience of walking on the dunes. As a spiral "gallery building" around its core, it forms a continuous path from one platform to the next, each a few steps higher than the one below, creating very interesting spatial and visual relationships between rooms.
