Japan Container House Rental

Admin September 16, 2026

Japan used container house rentals to accommodate athletes at the Nagoya Asian Games, primarily aiming to reduce costs. Here are its characteristics and specific details:

Accommodation Background and Purpose

For the 2026 Nagoya Asian Games, Japan, aiming to cut costs, chose not to build a large-scale athletes' village. Instead, it opted to disperse athletes and officials from participating delegations across cruise ships, container houses, and hotels. Initially, the organizing committee planned to construct the Asian Games village on the former site of the Nagoya Racecourse but abandoned the idea due to excessive costs. Later, it proposed dispersing the village into over 50 accommodation facilities, which was opposed by the Olympic Council of Asia, citing reduced opportunities for athlete interaction. Ultimately, the plan to use cruise ships combined with container houses was adopted.

Scale and Layout of Container Houses

At the Garden Pier in the Nagoya Port area, approximately 200 container-style accommodation facilities are neatly arranged, expected to house around 2,000 athletes and team officials. In addition to accommodation facilities, the headquarters and canteens of various sports delegations are also located here.

Internal Structure and Facilities of Container Houses

  • Spatial Layout: A container house consists of two units, each approximately 35 square meters, offering very limited space.
  • Bed Arrangement: Each unit contains four beds, although some are arranged for three people per room. For example, the container dormitory occupied by the Chinese men's basketball team accommodated three people per room, with single beds measuring 1.95 meters in length and 90 centimeters in width, providing cramped sleeping space for team members over two meters tall.
  • Sanitary Facilities: Sanitary facilities are included but shared. For instance, three members of the Chinese men's basketball team shared one toilet and one shower, leading to queues for morning ablutions and significantly reducing pre-game rest time.
  • Air Conditioning Configuration: Each unit is equipped with only one air conditioner to manage two bedrooms and a living room. Closing the bedroom doors prevents cold air from entering, making the rooms stuffy and difficult to sleep in; sleeping with the doors open compromises privacy. The organizing committee even suggested that athletes open the doors to cool the entire room before going to bed at night and then close them to sleep.
