How to Make a Portable Toilet

Admin September 21, 2026

There are mainly two common methods for making a portable toilet: using a water storage barrel and using a water storage tank and a pallet.

Making with a Water Storage Barrel

  1. Basic Modification: First, split the water storage barrel in half to form two semi-barrels. This step provides the foundation for constructing the main structure of the toilet. Then, fix universal wheels at the four corners of a suitably sized wooden board. The universal wheels enable the portable toilet to be easily moved to meet usage requirements in different scenarios. Next, use wooden strips and self-tapping screws to fix them on the upper side of the barrel to increase the height and provide sufficient space for installing other facilities.
  2. Building the Door Frame and Walls: Open a doorway on the side of the water storage barrel and install sponge strips to form the door frame. The sponge strips can provide a certain degree of sealing and cushioning. Embed plastic soft boards to form elevated walls and use the upper half of the water storage barrel as the roof. This initially constructs a closed space for the portable toilet.
  3. Installing Drainage and Connectors: Drill a hole at the bottom of the barrel and install a drainage pipe to form a floor drain for easy sewage discharge. Drill holes on the side to connect connectors for linking to external drainage pipes or other related equipment, ensuring that the sewage can be smoothly discharged and treated.
  4. Installing Sanitary Facilities: Install facilities such as a toilet, water tank, bathroom heater, showerhead, and washbasin. According to actual needs and usage scenarios, arrange these facilities reasonably to enable the portable toilet to have basic usage functions.

Making with a Water Storage Tank and a Pallet

  1. Pallet Modification: Fix universal wheels at the four corners of the bottom of the pallet to make the entire portable toilet easy to move. Place the water storage tank and cut it along the top marking line to form an open tank body, which provides space for subsequent installation of facilities and personnel entry and exit.
  2. Tank Body Combination and Opening: Stack two open-top water storage tanks and fix them with self-tapping screws to enhance the structural stability. Cut rectangular openings on the outer frame and tank body of the water storage tank as doorways for easy personnel entry and exit.
  3. Installing the Drainage System: Drill holes in the internal floor and install drainage elbows and pipes to ensure that the sewage can be smoothly discharged and avoid water accumulation problems.
  4. Installing Sanitary Facilities and the Door: Install facilities such as a toilet, faucet, washbasin, and showerhead to meet daily usage needs. Make a toilet door using wooden boards and hinges to ensure flexible door opening and closing and a certain degree of sealing.
