What to Do If a Container House Leaks Air

Admin September 17, 2026

Air leakage in container houses can be comprehensively addressed through sealing reinforcement, structural optimization, construction inspection, and auxiliary measures. The specific methods are as follows:

1. Sealing Material Reinforcement

  1. Sealing Strip Insertion
Use EPDM rubber sealing strips at easily air-leaking parts such as doors, windows, skylights, and exhaust vents. These strips have strong weather resistance and good elasticity, forming the first line of defense around the door sashes. Weatherstrips or windbrushes can be added at the bottom or sides of door sashes to block wind and rain penetration through lateral or bottom gaps. High-end designs use automatic lifting door bottom seals, which automatically descend to seal the bottom gap when the door is closed and lift up to avoid wear when opened.

  2. Multi-Layer Sealing System
Combine multiple layers of structures such as main sealing strips, weatherstrips, and door bottom seals to enhance overall airtightness by stacking sealing layers. For example, set a main sealing strip between the door frame and door sash, add a windbrush at the bottom of the door sash, and cooperate with an automatic seal at the door bottom to form a three-level protection.

2. Structural and Hardware Optimization

  1. High-Precision Hardware System
Equip door sashes with multi-point locking systems, which uniformly press the door sash against the door frame through multiple locking points when closed, ensuring the sealing strip is fully compressed and stressed. The door frame and door sash should be made of high-quality steel to ensure good structural rigidity, resistance to deformation, and high processing precision, resulting in small and uniform fitting gaps.

  2. Structural Rigidity Enhancement
The main structure of the container house should maintain high flatness to avoid sealing failure due to deformation. Welding or bolt connections should be treated for rust prevention to prevent gap enlargement caused by corrosion.

3. Construction and Inspection Specifications

  1. Standardized Installation Process
Install door frames and door sashes strictly according to standard procedures, adjusting hinges, locks, and other components to ensure tight fitting between the door sash and door frame. After installation, check that the sealing strip is continuous and wrinkle-free, ensuring no missing or misaligned parts.

  2. Air Tightness Testing
High-end products can undergo air tightness testing in the factory or on-site, simulating wind pressure environments by pressurizing or evacuating to locate air leakage points and promptly repair them, such as filling sealant or replacing damaged components.

4. Auxiliary Sealing Measures

  1. Insulation Layer Installation
Fill foam materials or glass fibers between walls and roofs as insulation layers, which not only improve thermal insulation performance but also reduce air penetration by filling gaps. Pay special attention to the fit between the insulation layer and the structure for semi-open container houses.

  2. Interlocking Partition Application
Connect adjacent container houses with interlocking partitions, which can be designed as panels of the same size as the containers or sleeve-type separation systems to seal gaps between containers. For example, use U-shaped sleeves to wrap the connection points, forming a continuous sealing surface.

  3. Wind Deflectors and Ventilation Balance
Install wind deflectors to change the direction of airflow and reduce direct wind impact on container houses built in open areas or mountainous regions. At the same time, set up exhaust fans or blowers inside the house to maintain internal and external air pressure balance and avoid air leakage caused by pressure differences.

5. Gap Repair Techniques

  1. Small Gap Treatment
First, apply steel structure-specific waterproof coating to the joints, then paste non-woven fabric to enhance toughness, and finally cover with a second layer of waterproof coating to form a flexible sealing layer.

  2. Large Gap Repair
For wider gaps, first fill with polymer flexible waterproof coating, then brush with special waterproof adhesive and paste non-woven fabric, repeating the brushing until level with the surrounding surface, ensuring the repair layer is weather-resistant and elastically matched.
