Urban Hive | Rethinking Future Green Living Through Modular Structure
"Urban Hive" is an exhibition jointly created by our company and MINI China, using modular, flexible, and reusable methods to rethink future ecological lifestyles.
We chose a 3×3×3 cubic meter space as the basic module. Each module serves a different function—living room, kitchen, dining room, gym, reading room, study, or bedroom. Modules can be combined or flexibly expanded to meet user needs. Each module is made of two factory-prefabricated parts and assembled on site.
A single module is like a cell with one function. Through combinations of multiple modules and spatial extension, every building becomes an organic organism that can adapt to varied spatial and functional needs. After the expo ends, each module can be dismantled and shipped to the next site for reassembly. This unity makes flexible spatial combinations and recycling possible—the core of sustainable development.
The main material chosen for the "Urban Hive" Shanghai exhibition installation is recyclable metal, a common construction material on building sites. Recycling not only helps control building costs but also expands how buildings can be used. The modular structural system already demonstrates its circular usability during assembly.
On the roof of each module, we reserve space for planting as needed—for example, vegetables. Besides fresh, healthy food, this saves energy otherwise spent on food transport and reduces greenhouse gases. Roofs can also hold solar equipment for power and heating. Irrigation water can be collected from rainwater and reused.
"Urban Hive" is more than a residential building concept. Its openness and flexibility let the public take part and become part of a micro-community, making it one of the most vibrant cores of the city.
