Case Study | Modular Ecological and Sustainable Farm Living Space

Facing the growing challenges of urban environmental decline and energy consumption in China, the SCUT team at South China University of Technology proposed a solar house prototype, E-CONCAVE, for the public. It aims to create an ecological, sustainable living space that offers individuals and communities a healthier, more nature-connected lifestyle while sharply cutting household energy use.

On a 24-square-meter site, the design team first split the plot in two: one half is an open space facing the organic farm; the other is the main residential living space. People, buildings, and nature merge—this is the design philosophy of green architecture. The project weaves the traditional Chinese courtyard (siheyuan) dwelling type into a modern way of living.

The building uses a container structure as its supporting frame, with wood cladding on the facade to shape an eco-friendly, natural look. Indoors, salons can be hosted; a folding dining table can seat eight for dinner. When guests stay overnight, the sofa can convert into a bed. By creating a continuous open interior, the living belt can shift freely among different functions and maximize the spatial effect.

Farmland as a future landscape gives this typology a self-sufficient food system. Common vegetables such as tomatoes, cabbage, peppers, eggplant, corn, sorghum, and sunflowers are grown on modular organic plots. For today's exhausted city dwellers, enjoying farm work is also an eco-friendly, refreshing activity, while an automatic irrigation system handles daily watering through recycled water.
