Location: Cairo, Egypt

UAE-based architects Mouaz Abouzaid, Bassel Omara and Ahmed Hammad propose housing solutions to address Cairo's cemetery-housing phenomenon for low-income families using shipping containers. 'Sheltainer' is a project with a deep vision that targets an important human need—solving a problem specifically for low-income families, students and refugees with a simple yet precise design that uses containers for more humane living.

The concept is based on a micro-housing solution for vulnerable people. Last year the design team focused on the micro-scale challenge by analyzing the simple human needs that can help ease crises in developing countries. This year the project takes the next step with new hope, looking at the big picture and shifting from a micro to a macro challenge. They choose to offer new hope to people living among the dead in Cairo and focus on Egyptian life in cemeteries—where life and death stand side by side.

The design centers on a single house unit that meets all the essential needs of a small family, then combines units into one cluster that forms a small neighborhood of eight homes around a green courtyard. The project aims to give Cairo a new 'lung' that lets the city breathe and to provide a truly 'human' place to live, while also easing the traffic crisis the capital has suffered for decades by establishing a new road network. Overall, 'Sheltainer' offers a flexible solution by redesigning the old market and optimizing the area—keeping current activities while adding new open spaces, new activities, new homes and, above all, new hope.
