Mobile Toilets in Shenzhen Scenic Areas
Mobile toilets in Shenzhen scenic areas feature innovative design and efficient utilization, mainly including three types: prefabricated "space capsule" public toilets, "wind-hiding pavilion" public toilets, and tidal public toilets.

The prefabricated "space capsule" public toilets, represented by the Longgang Universiade Center, employ modular construction techniques. Within a 120-square-meter space, they efficiently allocate 36 toilet stalls and integrate functional spaces such as baby care rooms, third-gender restrooms, and dressing rooms. The design highlights include roof skylights that introduce natural lighting, reducing energy consumption while enhancing user comfort. Additionally, the optimization of the surrounding environment combined with architectural styling creates scenic public toilets. These toilets are rapidly assembled using standardized components, shortening construction periods and adapting to the rapid development needs of scenic areas.
The "wind-hiding pavilion" public toilets focus on utilizing underground space. The main structure is hidden underground, with only part of the roof exposed and covered with soil and grass, achieving seamless integration with the natural environment. Inside, there are 41 toilet stalls. Through the coordinated design of underground ventilation ducts and roof skylights, the ventilation and lighting challenges of traditional underground public toilets are addressed. Its concealed design reduces visual interference with the scenic landscape, while the underground structure offers excellent thermal insulation, lowering energy consumption in summer.
The tidal public toilets represent an innovative solution proposed by Shenzhen to address gender-specific toilet demands. By installing lockable sliding tidal doors between male and female toilets, a dynamically adjustable universal toilet area is created. Management personnel can adjust toilet stall allocations based on real-time foot traffic, such as converting some male stalls to female stalls during peak female usage periods, effectively alleviating queuing issues. Since their pilot implementation in 2023, six tidal public toilets have been built in Nanshan District, some equipped with negative pressure exhaust systems (for rapid odor removal) and third-gender restrooms (to meet the needs of special groups), significantly enhancing the service efficiency and humanization level of public toilets in scenic areas.
Mobile toilets in Shenzhen scenic areas balance functionality and aesthetics through spatial innovation, technological integration, and dynamic management, providing visitors with convenient and comfortable toilet experiences while reflecting the refined and intelligent trends in urban public facility construction.
