Puyi's Mobile Toilet (Historical Context)

Admin September 20, 2026

There is no exact historical record or surviving physical evidence of a 'Puyi mobile toilet'. However, there are descriptions related to Puyi's toilet usage during the period of the Manchukuo Imperial Palace.

In the Manchukuo Imperial Palace, Puyi's toilet was located in a rather special position, directly opposite his bedroom. This layout was likely designed to facilitate Puyi's daily use, reducing his movement distance and reflecting the consideration for the convenience of the occupants in palace life.

The interior furnishings of Puyi's toilet also had unique features. A small wooden table was placed beside the toilet bowl. This was not an ordinary decoration but closely related to Puyi's personal habits. Puyi suffered from constipation, and every morning he would sit on the toilet waiting for the officials to present documents for his review. This small wooden table served as his temporary office desk for handling government affairs while using the toilet. This scene reflects that even in such private moments as using the toilet, Puyi could not escape the entanglement of government affairs. It also shows from the side that although Puyi, as the 'emperor' of Manchukuo, had no real power, he still needed to maintain a certain political image and fulfill his formal duties.

From these toilet-related situations, it can be seen that although Puyi lived in a special political environment, some details of his life still retained traces of palace life. The layout and furnishings of the toilet took into account both his physical condition and his need to handle government affairs, providing a unique perspective for studying Puyi's living conditions during the Manchukuo period. Although the 'Puyi mobile toilet' does not exist, these descriptions of his fixed toilet can also give us a deeper understanding of Puyi's life during that special historical period.
