Prefabricated Slab Roof Insulation

Admin September 18, 2026

The thermal insulation performance of prefabricated slab roofs is generally poor and can be improved through secondary roof covering or the use of prefabricated insulation boards.

The thermal insulation performance of prefabricated slab roofs often fails to meet requirements. During hot summers, the interior becomes stuffy, while in cold winters, it remains chilly. This is primarily due to the limited thermal insulation and heat retention capabilities of the prefabricated floor slabs themselves. To address this issue, rural areas typically apply secondary roofing materials over the floor slabs when constructing building roofs, compensating for the basic drawback of poor thermal insulation in the slabs.

Selection of Secondary Roofing Materials: The choice of secondary roofing materials should balance cost and effectiveness. A common approach is to use relatively inexpensive materials such as slag, lime, and cement for covering. These materials are not only cost-effective but also relatively simple to apply, effectively enhancing the roof's thermal insulation performance. Slag offers good thermal insulation, while lime and cement enhance structural stability. Together, they form an effective insulation layer that reduces heat exchange between the interior and exterior.

Application of Prefabricated Cement Insulation Boards: In addition to traditional secondary roofing materials, there are also prefabricated cement insulation boards available on the market. These boards are typically produced by professional manufacturers, such as Xingbojun and Qigong, and come in various shapes, with different flexural strengths, compressive strengths, and operating temperature ranges, as well as varying prices. The advantage of prefabricated cement insulation boards lies in their standardized production, consistent quality, and ease of installation. They can be directly laid over the floor slabs to form a continuous insulation layer. Additionally, these boards generally offer good durability and fire resistance, maintaining the roof's thermal insulation performance over the long term.

When selecting a thermal insulation solution, it is essential to consider the specific conditions of the house, budget, and usage requirements. For houses with limited budgets and lower thermal insulation demands, secondary roofing material coverage is a cost-effective option. For houses with higher thermal insulation requirements or more generous budgets, using prefabricated cement insulation boards for roof insulation renovation may be a preferable choice.
