Make Your Own Portable Toilet for Home Use
Admin October 11, 2026
You can create a homemade portable toilet for home use through the following two methods. Choose the appropriate plan based on your needs and pay attention to safe operation:

I. Basic Version: Making a Portable Toilet Using a Water Storage Tank
Main Structure Construction
- Select a discarded water storage tank as the core container. Use an angle grinder to cut it vertically in half, keeping the bottom as the sewage tank.
- Install universal wheels at the four corners of a wooden board to form a movable base. Fix wooden strips to the upper side of the tank with self-tapping screws to increase the height to a suitable sitting position (about 40 - 50cm).
- Cut a rectangular opening about 30cm long and wide on the side of the tank as a door opening. Stick sponge strips on both sides to form a door frame, embed a plastic soft board as a wall, and cover the top with the cut upper part of the tank as a roof.
Functional System Installation
- Sewage System: Drill a hole at the bottom of the tank and install a 5cm diameter drain pipe, connecting it to an external sewage tank (a sealed container needs to be prepared in advance). Place the toilet directly above the drain outlet and fix the water tank with glass glue to ensure tightness.
- Water Supply System: Drill a hole on the side of the tank and connect a three-way joint. One way connects to a shower head (a booster pump needs to be installed), and the other way extends to the door as the inlet pipe for the washbasin. A small plastic bucket can be installed on the top as a water storage device, supplying water by gravity.
- Detail Optimization: Paint the surface of the wooden strips with white waterproof paint to prevent mildew. Use foam strips to splice discarded honeycomb panels to make a simple door and fix it with hinges. Drill a hole on the door to install a faucet interface and connect a hose to the washbasin.
II. Advanced Version: Solar-Powered Mobile Toilet (Design details need to be supplemented)
Energy System
- Install solar panels (about 1㎡ in area) on the roof and connect them to a battery to supply power to lighting and exhaust fans. An inverter needs to be configured to convert direct current to alternating current, and the power is recommended to be no less than 100W.
Structural Upgrade
- Adopt a double-layer water storage tank design: the outer tank serves as the sewage tank, the inner tank serves as the clean water tank, and thermal insulation materials (such as polyurethane foam) are filled in between to prevent freezing in winter.
- Add an exhaust system: Install a 12V DC exhaust fan on the roof, powered by solar energy, with an air exchange rate of no less than 30m³ per hour.
Precautions:
- Operation Safety: When using an angle grinder, wear goggles and anti-cutting gloves. Mark the hole positions before cutting.
- Sealing Treatment: All pipe connections should be sealed with Teflon tape or glass glue to prevent leakage.
- Environmental Protection Requirements: The sewage tank should be cleaned regularly. It is recommended to use biodegradable agents to reduce odors.
- Regulatory Compliance: If used in public places, it should comply with the sanitary requirements for mobile toilets in the Urban Public Toilet Design Standard (CJJ 14 - 2016).
