How to Move the Toilet Drain Pipe

Admin October 08, 2026

Moving the toilet drain pipe can be achieved by altering the original pipe position, using a pipe extender, or raising the floor, depending on the relocation distance, drainage method, and construction conditions.

1. Altering the Original Toilet Drain Pipe Position (Suitable for Long-Distance or Precise Positioning)

  1. Confirm Connection to the Drain Stack: Plan the new toilet position in advance and check if it can be directly connected to the main drain stack. If it needs to cross the floor slab, you must consult and obtain consent from the downstairs neighbor to avoid disputes.
  2. Floor Slab Drilling and Pipe Installation: When drilling the floor slab, avoid the steel reinforcement structure (damaging it may affect the load-bearing capacity of the slab). The hole size should be one size larger than the outer diameter of the drain pipe (e.g., a 120mm hole for an 110mm pipe). Use special clamps to connect PVC drain pipes, ensuring a tight seal at the joints.
  3. Backfilling and Waterproofing: Backfill the hole with fine aggregate concrete in layers. After it solidifies, apply waterproof coating (e.g., polyurethane waterproof coating) and conduct a 48-hour closed-water test to confirm no leakage before proceeding with floor decoration.

2. Using a Toilet Pipe Extender (Suitable for Short-Distance Relocation)

  1. Applicable Scenarios: When the relocation distance is within 40 centimeters, prioritize using a pipe extender. It is recommended to use a special flat extender (space-saving) or a round pipe extender (smoother drainage).
  2. Construction Points: Maintain a slope of 1%-2% for the extender (1-2 cm drop per meter) to prevent water accumulation; minimize the number of elbows (maximum one elbow) to avoid blockages; seal the joints with sealant after installation.

3. Other Methods (Suitable for Special Scenarios)

  1. Raising the Floor and Relaying Pipes: If the relocation distance exceeds 40 centimeters, raise the floor by 20 centimeters and relay the drain pipes. Ensure the new pipes have a reasonable slope and adjust the door frame height after raising the floor.
  2. Cast Iron Pipe Treatment: For old cast iron pipes, secure the joints with clamps and apply sealant (e.g., glass glue) to prevent rust and leakage.
  3. Drainage Method Differences: For same-floor drainage (pipes on the same floor), construction can be carried out independently; for cross-floor drainage (pipes on the downstairs floor), obtain signatures from the property management and neighbors to avoid disputes later.

Precautions:

  • Turn off the main water valve before construction to prevent leaks.
  • Conduct a closed-water test again after damaging the waterproof layer.
  • If floor slab drilling is involved, it is recommended to be carried out by professionals to ensure structural safety.
