How to Build a Portable Toilet

Admin October 22, 2026

There are mainly two ways to build a portable toilet: using a water storage barrel and using a water storage tank and a pallet. Here are the specific introductions:

Building with a Water Storage Barrel

  1. Basic Frame Construction: Use an angle grinder to split the water storage barrel in half. Fix universal wheels at the four corners of a wooden board for easy toilet movement. Secure wooden strips and self-tapping screws to the upper side of the barrel to increase height and provide space for installing other components.
  2. Wall and Roof Construction: Create an opening on the side of the water storage barrel, install sponge strips to form a door frame, and embed plastic soft boards to form elevated walls. Place the upper half of the water storage barrel on top of the wooden strips as the roof.
  3. Drainage and Water Storage Device Setup: Drill a hole at the bottom of the barrel and install a drain pipe to form a floor drain. Drill a hole on the side to connect a direct joint and place a plastic bucket to form a small water storage device for collecting sewage.
  4. Bathroom Equipment Installation: Use a water pipe to make a bath heater and install a three-way joint to connect the showerhead. Place the toilet and secure the water tank, connecting the drain pipe to the sewage bucket. Horizontally connect a water pipe from the three-way joint of the outlet pipe to the door as the inlet pipe for the sink, and drill a hole in the door to install the joint.

Building with a Water Storage Tank and a Pallet

  1. Mobile Base Preparation: Fix universal wheels at the four corners of the bottom of a plastic pallet. Place a water storage tank recovered from a garbage station to provide a mobile base for the entire toilet.
  2. Tank Modification and Connection: Use an angle grinder to cut along the marked line on the top of the water storage tank to remove one side and form an open tank. Invert another open-top water storage tank and stack it on the first tank, securing the outer frame with self-tapping screws to increase the internal space of the toilet.
  3. Drainage System Setup: Cut the outer frame and tank of the water storage tank to form a doorway. Drill a hole in the internal floor, insert a elbow from the bottom upwards and cut into a water pipe. Seal the gaps with glue and then cut off the excess water pipe to ensure smooth drainage.
  4. Bathroom Equipment Installation: Align the toilet with the drain hole and secure it with glue. Fix a water pipe on the wall buckle to install a faucet, and secure a pipe cap with screws at the bottom. Connect the water pipe and drill a hole as the outlet for the drain pipe. Drill a hole in the pipe cap, apply glass glue, and secure a stainless steel basin as the sink. Connect the inlet pipe to the toilet water tank, connect the shower hose, and install the showerhead bracket and toilet seat. Install a spray-type showerhead made of a water pipe.
  5. Door Installation: Bring a wooden board, fix hinges on the frame of the water storage tank, and fix the other side of the hinges to the wooden board to form a door. Then install a door handle for easy opening and closing.
