Container-Renovated Mobile Housing

Admin September 17, 2026

Container-renovated mobile housing, also known as box-type housing, is a modular building product that is movable and reusable.

Origin and Development: The concept can be traced back to the renovation practices following the standardization of containers in the mid-20th century. Initially, old containers were transformed into temporary housing. On December 13, 2013, Brighton, UK, was the first to adopt it as a solution to the housing crisis. As it developed, it could be classified into three categories based on structure: traditional container-renovated box-type housing, brand-new welded box-type mobile housing, and detachable box-type mobile housing.

Features and Advantages:

  • Rapid Installation and Multi-Story Combination: It features rapid installation and multi-story combination, widely used in temporary office spaces, B&Bs in tourist attractions, and smart waste stations.
  • Convenient Transportation: It is particularly suitable for units that frequently change construction sites. Thanks to factory prefabrication, rapid assembly can be achieved.
  • Sturdy and Durable: It has strong earthquake and deformation resistance. The steel frame structure design endows it with good wind and load-bearing capabilities.
  • Excellent Sealing Performance: Strict manufacturing processes ensure good water tightness. The wall design usually offers excellent sound insulation and thermal insulation properties.
  • Flexible Combination: Based on a standard steel chassis, it can derive many combined spaces, such as conference rooms, dormitories, kitchens, and bathrooms. Modular production results in a high assembly rate, and through expansion design, the usable area can be flexibly adjusted.
  • Easy Assembly and Disassembly: Relying on detachable connector technology, it has high assembly and disassembly efficiency, is reusable, has superior performance, is stable and firm, and has good earthquake resistance.

Application Example: At the 2026 Nagoya Asian Games, the organizing committee used container-type accommodation facilities to provide housing for approximately 2,000 athletes and officials. However, these facilities exposed issues of insufficient space and quality problems.

Future Trends: Researchers continue to explore new building materials and assembly technologies. The practical application of the detailed construction of multi-connected container houses and the construction method of packaged containers enhances the overall stability of the buildings, simplifies the construction process, and reduces labor costs. In the future, container houses are expected to deeply integrate the concepts of the energy internet and smart buildings, better integrating various renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power by constructing distributed energy networks.
