Container Office | Shenzhen Central Park Project Command Center

The Central Park command center sits within Phase 1 of Shenzhen Futian Central Park. The building uses temporary containers and a steel structure so it can adapt flexibly to different stages of park construction and to future operations. During construction, it serves as a command center and temporary office for project site management. After the park is completed, it will be scaled down and open to the public as an ecological classroom, exhibition hall, and service facility.

At the start of design, two main challenges stood out: how to integrate and separate the permanent and temporary parts of the building, and how to create a harmonious dialogue between the large office and exhibition structure and the surrounding park landscape. To make future dismantling of building components easier, the architects used a curved grille to connect the functional units formed by temporary containers and permanent steel structure. This creates a semi-outdoor porch and an envelope that shifts with light and shadow, forming soft curves that embrace the natural surroundings.

White aluminum grilles are arranged along arc-shaped outlines that intersect the square volumes at 45-degree angles, creating a playful visual transition from solid to void by changing planar angles. By day, this facade envelope acts as a canvas for tree shadows; by night, it lets interior light filter outward to form a curtain of light.

Set in a park environment, the building features large openings in its main exhibition hall, meeting rooms, and office spaces, maximizing landscape views and natural light indoors. Entrances, stairs, and semi-outdoor courtyards formed between the intersecting structures create interactive spaces that engage with the exterior landscape.

As usual, the unforeseen happens: temporary site conditions led to a last-minute relocation and major changes to the primary structure, affecting the integrity of the building geometry. Yet this is a building designed to keep adapting to changing functional needs, so it is worth watching for the renewed state that will appear after temporary components are removed and operational functions change once park construction is complete.
