Modular School | Modular Teaching and Administration Building in India

This modular administration building sits on a university campus in India. The client required completion in the shortest possible time while also allowing for future changes. In this context, the architects proposed a prefabricated steel concept. The main prefabricated components used on the project were fabricated in the plant, then transported to the site for assembly—ensuring both precision and construction quality within a short timeframe.

The overall plan is very simple and linear. Classrooms on the north and south sides enjoy the surrounding natural environment, while administration and service areas are placed on the east and west sides of the building. All classrooms open outdoors, and corridors face the hall. The atrium is divided into upper and lower zones, with a vertical circulation spine in the center composed of two staircases and walkways.

Part of this hall is used as a meeting venue; another part serves as a library and music hall. The tree-like structure at the center—which we call the "Tree of Wisdom"—supports the atrium stairs and walkways. The full-height space links the atrium stairs with the sports field to the north and the cafeteria to the south, making it easy for students to move about between classes.

For the supporting structure, bridge decks and non-load-bearing walls were chosen. On this adaptable base, classroom modules can be easily divided and reconfigured. Cross ventilation is a critical architectural strategy; extensive strip windows help prevent excess heat indoors.

Gaps between the administration and teaching areas provide good ventilation for the atrium. Louvers on the terraces draw heat away, helping keep courtyard temperatures stable year-round. The facade design draws inspiration from the surrounding hills, preserving classroom views while shading from the sun. The double-layer exterior walls cool the building and also protect against splash from heavy rain.
