Modular Building | Vertical Farm in the City

Admin September 12, 2026

This futuristic farm project was conceived to encourage city residents to grow food in the spaces where they live, while the project's architectural expression also helps this ecosystem endure.

Cross-laminated timber is used to develop a modular system for structure, finishes, and planters. Working with CLT has many advantages. It is manufactured with precision, easy to transport, and quick to install. Living with wood also brings ecological benefits: trees grow on natural energy. Manufacturing structural engineered wood products consumes far less energy than steel, cement, or concrete, and produces fewer greenhouse gases in the process. In addition, wood itself stores carbon (roughly one ton per cubic meter), so its overall environmental footprint is lighter than that of other building materials.

The farmhouse consists of a fully modular building system that is prefabricated off-site and packed flat on truck beds. Prefabricating the modular building kit shortens construction time and reduces impact on the surrounding environment. The building system is based on the structural clarity of a traditional A-frame house and connects to diagonal ribs that carry loads through the building. Each wall face of the frame has three layers. The inner layer holds finishes, electrical, and plumbing; the middle layer holds structure and insulation; the outer layer holds gardening elements and water supply.

For a single-family home, this building system gives residents a design approach so they can shape their own spaces according to their needs for living space and cultivation space. For example, residents can choose one or more options from the structure and garden systems, waste treatment units, water treatment systems, hydroponics, and solar systems, and through different arrangements and combinations create a series of spatial layouts with a degree of flexibility.

Taller structures assemble into duplex A-frames, providing a large open space for living room and kitchen on the first floor and tent-like spaces for bedrooms and bathrooms on the second floor. The sloping walls create room for exterior gardening and form a V-shaped buffer between apartments. This also lets natural ventilation and natural light enter the building. The architecture evokes a direct connection with the natural environment, in sharp contrast to the concrete landscape of our cities. A tent surrounded by nature. The yin and yang of colorful gardens and healthy interiors.
