Choosing Roof Materials for a Sunroom
Sunrooms remain a popular topic among homeowners. Below we explore how to choose roof materials. Roof selection is a technical decision—you must consider appearance and reliable long-term performance. Main options include glass, color-coated steel, and deck tile roofs. Sunroom manufacturers provide a comprehensive overview.

- Tempered glass roof
Sunroom manufacturers note that glass roofs offer the best transparency. Common glass options include:
Single-layer tempered glass: typically 8–12 mm thick. Lower cost and good load capacity compared with some alternatives. If broken, glass fragments may fall, posing some risk to people and property.
Laminated glass: usually 5+5 or 6+6 mm laminated glass with good load capacity. Even if damaged, glass stays in place—very safe.
Insulated glass: many specifications exist for sunroom roofs; 5+12A+5 is widely used. Low-E insulated glass further improves acoustic performance.
Insulated glass with built-in electric honeycomb blinds: a premium option with integrated shading inside the cavity—excellent for insulation, sound control, and solar shading without external hardware.
Color-coated steel roof sunroom
Sunroom manufacturers state that color-coated steel insulates well but is opaque with limited color options. The main advantage is lower cost. Large overseas aluminum sunrooms sometimes use color-coated steel due to steel strength and weldability. For residential functional sunrooms, color-coated steel is generally not recommended.
- Deck tile roof sunroom
Multi-layer roofs with deck tiles, sauna boards, and other layers offer strong insulation, varied colors, and attractive appearance—but light transmission is limited and cost is higher. Skylights and tall perimeter windows improve daylighting and ventilation. Deck tile roofs typically combine five layers with thermally broken aluminum and glass curtain wall elements, delivering distinctive design and structural safety.
- Polycarbonate panels
Sunroom manufacturers note that polycarbonate (polycarbonate sheet) costs less than single tempered glass, is lightweight and easy to install, but has a shorter service life—suitable for basic sunrooms or sun canopies.
