Can the Toilet Position Be Moved?

Admin October 09, 2026

The toilet position (马桶位置) can be moved, but the construction method must be carefully selected based on the moving distance and site conditions, and operational specifications must be strictly followed.

I. Common Moving Methods and Applicable Scenarios

  1. Using a Toilet Offset Connector

    • Suitable for small-scale movements of 10-40 centimeters. The risk of blockage significantly increases beyond 1 meter.
    • Choose a channel-type offset connector and operate after tiling. The pipeline should have a 5-centimeter drop reserved to ensure smooth drainage.
    • If the moving distance is within 50mm, a offset flange can be used directly; for 50mm-150mm, a pipeline slope should be created (2% slope for every 10mm of movement); for distances exceeding 150mm, it is recommended to modify the sewer pipe (consultation with the downstairs resident is required).
  2. Raising the Floor

    • Suitable for large-scale movements (e.g., beyond 1 meter). The floor needs to be raised 12-20 centimeters to form a slope and prevent sewage backflow.
    • After construction, it will be like “stepping up to use the toilet”, and a new waterproof layer must be made to avoid leakage.
  3. Sunken Bathroom

    • If the bathroom has a sunken structure, the pipeline can be freely adjusted, and the toilet can be moved simply by extending the drainage pipe without additional floor or slope treatment.
  4. Wall-Hung Toilet

    • Adopts a flat trap design with a thickness of only 8 centimeters, saving space and less prone to blockage within 3 meters of movement.
    • The downside is the higher price, and later maintenance requires wall removal, making the operation more cumbersome.

II. Precautions for Moving the Toilet

  1. Potential Issues

    • After moving, it may reduce the floor height (e.g., raising the floor or using a wall-hung toilet), increase the floor weight (the load-bearing capacity of the floor slab needs to be evaluated), or cause poor drainage due to insufficient slope.
    • If modifying the sewer pipe is involved, consultation with the downstairs resident is required; otherwise, it may lead to neighborhood disputes.
  2. Construction Specifications

    • Ensure smooth drainage and avoid pipeline bending or insufficient slope that may cause blockage.
    • After moving, conduct a closed-water test (lasting 24-48 hours) to check for leakage in the waterproof layer.
    • For old houses or scenarios with special load-bearing structures, it is recommended to consult a professional engineer or property management in advance.

III. Summary and Recommendations

  • Small-scale movement (≤40cm): Prioritize using an offset connector, paying attention to the slope and drop.
  • Large-scale movement (>40cm): Raise the floor or switch to a wall-hung toilet; a sunken bathroom offers the most flexibility.
  • Core Principle: Prioritize smooth drainage, balance space utilization and construction costs, and avoid affecting the living experience or causing subsequent issues due to improper operation.
