Yushu Mobile Toilet and Dry Latrine

Admin September 27, 2026

Currently, there is no clear evidence indicating the existence of a type of mobile toilet in Yushu that fully conforms to the traditional definition of a dry latrine. The following analysis is carried out from two aspects: the definition of dry latrines and the types and characteristics of mobile toilets in Yushu.

Definition of Dry Latrines

A dry latrine is a relatively primitive form of toilet. Its core features include the absence of flushing equipment, meaning it does not use water to flush away excreta; and the lack of harmless treatment of feces, which are usually directly accumulated in the latrine's fecal pit. This type of toilet was once relatively common in areas with poor sanitary conditions and scarce water resources, but it poses risks of environmental pollution and disease transmission.

Types and Characteristics of Mobile Toilets in Yushu

  • Basic single-room stainless-steel-shell mobile toilet: This type of toilet usually uses stainless steel as the shell material, featuring a sturdy structure and strong durability. However, its sewage discharge method is mostly simple sewage discharge. It may be equipped with a simple collection device, but it does not completely leave feces untreated. Moreover, it generally has a certain flushing or cleaning mechanism, which does not match the characteristics of dry latrines with no flushing and no treatment.
  • Environmentally friendly mobile toilet: Environmentally friendly mobile toilets focus on the treatment and resource utilization of excreta. For example, some mobile toilets using biodegradation technology utilize microorganisms to decompose feces, converting them into harmless substances and even producing organic fertilizers. This is in stark contrast to the characteristic of dry latrines that do not carry out harmless treatment.
  • Biodegradation module mobile toilet: This type of toilet treats feces through biodegradation modules, enabling rapid decomposition and reduction of feces while reducing odors and the spread of pathogens. This also does not conform to the definition of dry latrines.

In conclusion, although there are various types of mobile toilets in Yushu, they all, to varying degrees, treat feces or use flushing and other cleaning methods, showing significant differences from traditional dry latrines in terms of definition and function.
