Xuelong 2 Mobile Toilet

Admin October 02, 2026

The Xuelong 2 is not equipped with mobile toilets; its sanitary facilities primarily consist of fixed dry-wet separation toilets. Here is a detailed explanation:

Design Standards for Fixed Sanitary Facilities

As China's first independently built polar scientific research icebreaker, the cabin design of the Xuelong 2 must meet the special requirements of polar navigation. According to publicly available information, the restrooms in the crew cabins are equipped with dry-wet separation toilets as standard. This design aims to enhance space utilization and optimize sanitary conditions. The dry-wet separation structure physically isolates the excretion area from the washing area, effectively preventing the spread of moisture, reducing the risk of equipment dampness, and facilitating daily cleaning and maintenance. Additionally, the installation position of fixed toilets is usually directly connected to the ship's drainage system, ensuring that excreta can be quickly discharged into the treatment tank through vacuum pipes or gravity, in compliance with the strict environmental protection and sanitation management requirements of polar navigation.

Analysis of Reasons for Not Equipping Mobile Toilets

  1. Space Limitations: Cabin space on polar research vessels is extremely precious and must prioritize scientific research equipment, living supplies, and personnel activity areas. Mobile toilets require additional space and must be equipped with independent excreta storage devices, which may affect the ship's stability due to excessive volume or weight during long-term voyages.
  2. Environmental Protection Requirements: The polar environment is fragile, and international conventions impose strict restrictions on the discharge of pollutants from ships. Fixed toilets can achieve harmless treatment of excreta through a centralized treatment system, while the excreta storage devices of mobile toilets, if not managed properly, may pose a risk of leakage, violating environmental protection regulations.
  3. Usage Efficiency: Fixed toilets are integrated with the ship's water supply and drainage systems, enabling 24-hour stable use. Mobile toilets, on the other hand, require manual periodic cleaning of excreta. In the extremely cold environment of the polar regions, the cleaning process may be less efficient due to equipment freezing or inconvenient personnel operations.

Adaptability of Existing Facilities

The fixed sanitary facilities on the Xuelong 2 have been verified through polar navigation and can effectively cope with challenges such as ship swaying and low-temperature freezing. For example, the toilet material is selected from low-temperature-resistant alloys, and the drainage pipes are equipped with insulation layers to ensure normal operation in environments as cold as -30°C. Additionally, the ship's sewage treatment system can sterilize excreta before discharging it, further reducing the impact on the polar environment.
