Container Building Case by Xuanwu Lake
The [Yunji Xiaochao] and [Yunji Coffee] by Xuanwu Lake in Nanjing are typical cases, built with three containers. The design features a simple white exterior, with the left and right containers spreading out in a butterfly shape. A second-floor indoor lounge area is set up above the middle. The first floor has an open-air lounge area, while the second floor offers a panoramic viewing space with fully transparent floor-to-ceiling windows, equipped with fill lights for convenient tourist photo-taking. The building has a simple layout with clear functional divisions, becoming a popular spot for internet celebrities.
Design Features of Container Houses
Modular Combination
Container houses achieve spatial expansion through the splicing of standard units. For example, the Xuanwu Lake case uses a combination of three containers to form a two-story structure. In other cases, five 40-foot containers or six 20-foot containers are used to build a 350-square-meter residence, or a cantilever design extends the end of the container over the lake to form a lookout tower.Functional Diversity
Containers can be transformed into residences, shops, cafes, art galleries, etc. For example:
- Residential Type: A family in a Jiangsu town built a container house with insulation layers, planning a living room, kitchen, and bedroom inside. A Danish man built a family residence with nine containers, designing large windows to introduce natural light.
- Commercial Type: The Xuanwu Lake container shop, the Starbucks store in Taiwan (designed by Kengo Kuma), and the Songxiangyuan Container Cliff Restaurant (assembled from 67 containers).
- Artistic Type: The Joshua Tree Apartment arranges containers in a starburst style, creating a sculptural appearance.
- Personalized Decoration
The exterior facades feature diverse coatings, such as black smooth paint paired with natural wood interiors, or bright white paint extending the landscape view. The interior adopts a minimalist style, mainly in white or natural wood tones, equipped with modern furniture. Some cases install solar panels on the roof or use blue gradient tiles for bathroom waterproofing.
