Mobile Toilets in Urban and Rural Areas of Xinjiang
Xinjiang has implemented a series of scientific and practical measures for mobile toilets in urban and rural areas, covering multiple aspects such as technology, planning, and customized services.

I. Technological Adaptation in Tourist Attractions and Rural Tourism Sites
When promoting mobile toilets in tourist attractions and rural tourism sites in Xinjiang, priority is given to local environmental constraints, adopting closed-loop treatment technologies built with “waterless” or “water-saving” systems. For example, microbial degradation technology decomposes waste through specific microbial communities, achieving in-situ reduction and harmlessness; physical separation and chemical conversion technologies reduce pollutant content through filtration, sedimentation, and chemical treatment. These technologies not only reduce reliance on traditional water-flushing systems but also avoid the potential ecological impact of sewage discharge, making them particularly suitable for arid or water-scarce regions. Additionally, as a supplementary unit to fixed public sanitation systems, mobile toilets offer flexible layout options, allowing dynamic adjustment of quantity and location based on tourist traffic. For instance, at the entrances or viewpoints of natural attractions with pronounced tourist seasons, demand can be predicted using tourist traffic models, and temporary mobile toilets can be added to effectively alleviate peak-period restroom pressure.
II. The “Toilet Revolution” in Rural Living Environment Improvement
Xinjiang has focused on rural toilet renovation as a key aspect of the “toilet revolution.” By the end of 2024, the普及率 (popularization rate) of rural sanitary household toilets across the region reached 63%. Some areas have adopted decentralized sewage treatment units or twin-pit sanitary dry toilets to achieve harmless treatment of fecal waste. Decentralized units purify sewage through small-scale treatment units, allowing for discharge or reuse upon meeting standards; twin-pit dry toilets achieve harmlessness through natural fermentation by alternating use of two pits, with the resulting fecal waste used as organic fertilizer for farmland, forming a resource cycle. For example, Aksu City invested 557 million yuan in laying sewage pipelines, enabling 16,000 rural households to use clean household toilets. Domestic sewage is collected through the pipeline network and treated at sewage treatment plants before being used for desert greening, improving sanitary conditions and promoting ecological restoration.
III. Customized Design and Scenario-Based Applications
Xinjiang customizes mobile toilets according to the needs of different scenarios, enhancing practicality and aesthetics. For example, corrugated-plate mobile toilets designed for camp-themed parks feature walls made of galvanized corrugated plates, offering both durability and lightness, with hand-painted patterns integrated into the surrounding environment to avoid the monotony of “thousand toilets looking the same.” Such customized designs not only meet functional requirements but also become distinctive landscapes in tourist attractions or rural areas, enhancing the visitor experience.
