Why Are Prefabricated Houses Cheap?

Admin September 18, 2026

There are several main reasons why prefabricated houses are cheap:

Firstly, the cost of building materials is relatively low. The prefabricated panels of prefabricated houses are made in advance in factories. Factories adopt large-scale and standardized production methods, with high production efficiency. They can effectively control costs through bulk purchasing of raw materials and optimizing production processes. In contrast, ordinary houses use a wider variety of building materials, and the purchasing process may be more scattered, making it difficult to achieve the same cost advantages, and the purchasing costs may be higher.

Secondly, fast construction speed and a relatively small proportion of labor costs. The construction period of prefabricated houses is short. From factory production of modules to on-site assembly, the whole process is efficient and orderly, greatly shortening the construction time. However, the construction process of ordinary houses is complex, involving multiple types of work and construction links, requiring a long construction period, and labor costs account for a relatively large proportion of the total cost. For example, in the United States, there is a large shortage of construction workers, and wages are high. Workers earn at least $200 a day, and those with better skills can earn $500 a day normally, and they work 8 hours a day and leave on time. For an ordinary house, the labor cost plus material cost can easily reach at least one million RMB, while prefabricated houses can effectively reduce this part of the cost.

Furthermore, the structure is relatively simple, and the design and construction difficulties are small. Prefabricated houses usually adopt relatively standardized designs and structures, reducing complex design and construction links, so their costs are not too high. However, ordinary houses may have more complex design and structural requirements, such as unique architectural styles and special spatial layouts, which will increase the difficulty of design and construction, and thus lead to a corresponding increase in costs.

Finally, the advantages of factory production. Prefabricated houses generally adopt assembly-line operations, breaking down reinforced concrete houses into individual modules for production, and then packaging and transporting them to the local area for assembly, just like building with blocks. This production method can improve production efficiency, reduce production costs, and at the same time ensure the consistency and stability of building quality.
