Where to Place Container Houses

Admin September 16, 2026

Container houses can be placed on privately-owned land, leased land, in specific parks, and other legally compliant special locations, but must avoid public areas and places that affect others.

Privately-owned land:

  • Rural homestead land: Can be placed in idle areas of the homestead, such as corners of the yard. It has diverse uses, serving as living space, storage space, and can even be transformed into a homestay for tourists. However, it must be on one's own legally confirmed homestead land; placing it on illegal homestead land or someone else's homestead land is not legal.
  • Urban privately-owned land: Some urban residents own private land, such as small plots in the suburbs, where container houses can be placed as vacation cottages, studios, or rental properties.

Leased land:

  • Industrial land: In some industrial concentration areas, there is idle industrial land available for lease at relatively low costs. It can be renovated and arranged according to needs, for example, small enterprises can lease it for employee dormitories.
  • Commercial land: There may be small plots of land for rent around some commercial areas, where container houses can be placed as commercial supporting facilities, such as small cafes or book bars.

Specific parks:

  • Creative parks: Encouraging innovation and unique architectural forms, container houses are suitable for placement here and can serve as artist studios, designer showrooms, or creative office spaces.
  • Agricultural parks: With large areas of land, container houses can be placed here.

Other situations:

  • Fields: If the ground is not hardened, there is no access to water and electricity, and it is only used for storing agricultural materials without changing the land nature or forming permanent occupation, it generally does not constitute illegal construction. However, some major agricultural provinces have strict regulations; for example, new regulations in a certain province in 2025 require temporary building registration for container houses in fields, even if they are only used for storing farm tools.
  • Rooftops: Can be placed on rooftops as storage rooms, but must meet conditions such as not hardening the ground and having no access to water and electricity to avoid being identified as illegal construction.
  • Wastelands such as barren mountains, slopes, abandoned ponds, and ditches: Must consult with the relevant land management department and obtain government permission before placement.

Restrictions: Container houses cannot be placed in locations that obstruct rural traffic or affect the lives of other villagers, nor can they be placed in public areas.
