What's the Difference Between Container Houses and Prefab Panel Houses?

Admin September 12, 2026

Today's portable building market is mainly split into two product types: living container houses and prefab panel houses. Both are widely used across the country. Many buyers share the same question: what is the real difference between living container houses and prefab panel houses?

Below, our company explains the differences in detail.

  1. Design

Living container houses: They bring in modern home-design elements. Each unit is a single box that can be combined and stacked freely. Sealing, sound insulation, fire resistance, moisture resistance, and thermal insulation tend to perform better.

Prefab panel houses: They are assembled on site from steel, panels, and other raw materials. Sealing, sound insulation, fire resistance, moisture resistance, and thermal insulation are weaker, and you only know the real result after installation is finished—making side-by-side comparison harder.

  1. Structure

Living container houses: A welded, integral structure that is stronger and safer, with better wind and earthquake resistance. Even in typhoons, earthquakes, or ground subsidence, they are far less likely to come apart or collapse.

Prefab panel houses: An inlaid/assembled structure with lower resistance. On weak foundations, or in typhoons and earthquakes, they are more prone to collapse or coming apart, and are less safe.

  1. Installation

Living container houses: Can be crane-lifted as a whole. No concrete foundation is required. Installation can take about 15 minutes, move-in about 1 hour, and they are ready to use once power is connected.

Prefab panel houses: Installation needs a concrete foundation, then the main frame, walls, ceiling, and water/electrical work. It takes much longer.

  1. Fit-out

Living container houses: Flooring, walls, ceiling, water and power, doors and windows, exhaust fans, and more are finished in one pass for long-term use—energy-saving, environmentally friendly, and attractive.

Prefab panel houses: Walls, ceiling, water and power, lighting, doors and windows, and other fittings must be installed on site. The schedule is longer, material waste is higher, and the look is usually less refined.

  1. Use

Living container houses: More human-centered design makes living and office use more comfortable. Rooms can be added or removed at any time, so the layout stays flexible.

Prefab panel houses: Sound insulation and fire performance are weaker; comfort for living or office use is only average. Once installed, the form is fixed and room count cannot be temporarily increased or reduced.

  1. Relocation

Living container houses: No need to dismantle for moving. Contents can travel with the box. There is little wear, and units can be lifted and relocated more than a thousand times—convenient and cost-saving.

Prefab panel houses: Moving means dismantling and reinstalling. Belongings must be packed separately. Each tear-down and rebuild causes high material loss and cost, takes time and labor, and after about four or five cycles the building is essentially worn out.
