Key Points for Container Building Design Handling

Admin September 12, 2026
  1. Waterproofing methods for container buildings

When waterproofing a container, treat special locations first, then the large areas. For the roof, waterproof membranes are recommended: they age well and can extend roof service life.

  1. Repairing small cracks in box-type rooms: At cracks in a container bathroom, brush on a layer of color waterproof adhesive made for steel structures, apply a layer of non-woven fabric, then brush waterproof coating over the fabric several times and let it dry.

  2. Repairing larger cracks in box-type rooms: Fill cracks in the container bathroom with easy-to-apply polymer, brush on a flexible waterproof coating, then apply specialty waterproof adhesive, stick on non-woven fabric, and brush the coating repeatedly as above.

Waterproofing can use rigid structural detailing or soft gasket strips and similar methods. Container houses are often used on construction sites and as temporary buildings. They offer many advantages: relatively low, affordable cost, high space utilization, and very convenient loading and unloading.

Standard exterior sizes for container houses are mainly 20 ft and 40 ft. Both are 2438 mm (8 ft) wide and 2591 mm (8.5 ft) high; length is 6058 mm for 20 ft and 12192 mm for 40 ft. A 20 ft container house is generally $1,361-$2,083 each; a 40 ft unit is generally $2,778-$3,333 each. Freight also depends on distance.

  1. Insulation and cold protection

Non-toxic ceramics, insulation layers, double roofs, and similar measures can solve part of the problem; the ventilation and heating system also needs to be rebuilt.

For buildings that do not rely on the container's own material as the design intent, the envelope can be rebuilt.

  1. Transport

In sparsely populated areas, use freight transport and install with cranes and forklifts. In dense urban areas, disassembly for transport may be needed—though foldable containers already make this much easier:

  1. Building permits

Feasible in most urban areas.

Some approvals and acceptance checks are still required to meet use standards.
