What is a Container House

Admin September 15, 2026

A container house is a type of building that uses containers as its basic structure and is transformed or redesigned and combined to have residential or usage functions. Its core features, construction methods, and application scenarios are as follows:

Core Structure and Construction Methods

There are usually two production and processing techniques for container houses:

  1. Direct transformation of shipping containers: Cut and weld doors and windows on the original container and reinforce its internal structure to meet residential or office needs.
  2. Factory-prefabricated modular structure: Based on container dimensions, design and manufacture top and bottom frames as well as walls (commonly using color-steel sandwich panels or fire-resistant rock wool panels) in the factory. Connect them with columns to form independent modules, and then transport them to the site for assembly. This type of structure has a higher degree of integration and can include water and electricity pipelines, bathroom facilities, and even interior soft furnishings, enabling 'move-in ready' living.

Performance Advantages

  1. Strong structural stability: It adopts a high-strength steel structure frame, with excellent wind and earthquake resistance. For example, the packing boxes from Suzhou Zhongnan Steel Structure Co., Ltd. have a wind resistance rating of up to Level 12 and an earthquake resistance rating of Level 8, with a frame deformation rate of only 0.18%; CIMC standard container houses have a wind resistance rating of Level 11 and an earthquake resistance rating of Level 7, both far exceeding industry safety standards.
  2. High construction efficiency: Factory assembly line production allows for parallel operations, shortening the construction period by more than 60%. For example, the 63 modular elderly care apartments purchased by British merchants were shipped from China to the UK and completed on-site hoisting in just two weeks.
  3. Environmental protection and economy: Factory prefabrication reduces on-site construction waste, dust, and noise pollution; modules can be repeatedly disassembled and relocated, reducing long-term usage costs.
  4. Flexibility and adaptability: Modular design supports horizontal and vertical stacking and combination, adapting to various scenarios such as residences, shops, art galleries, and temporary offices, and can even create large buildings of more than four floors.

Application Scenarios

Container houses have been widely used in temporary offices, accommodations, event support facilities, engineering camps, commercial pop-ups, and government and enterprise temporary buildings. For example, the Australian project uses steel structure modular houses that integrate heat preservation, fire prevention, sound insulation, and waterproofing; container houses exported from Shenzhen ports cover more than 150 countries and regions, becoming representatives of the new productive forces in the global construction industry.

Development Potential

With technological upgrades, container houses continue to improve in terms of safety and comfort, and the global market size is growing rapidly (reaching 293.36 billion yuan in 2022 and expected to exceed 384.912 billion yuan in 2028), becoming an underestimated trillion-level blue ocean industry.
