Underwater Container House Viewing Window

Admin September 15, 2026

The glass for viewing windows in underwater container houses typically uses tempered laminated glass. The following provides a detailed explanation from the perspectives of material properties, application scenarios, and practical cases:

1. Properties of Tempered Laminated Glass
Tempered laminated glass is composed of two layers of tempered glass bonded together with a PVB (polyvinyl butyral) interlayer. It combines the high strength of tempered glass with the explosion-proof properties of laminated glass. Its core advantages include:

  • High Impact Resistance: Tempered glass undergoes high-temperature quenching treatment, forming a compressive stress layer on its surface, making its impact resistance 3-5 times that of ordinary glass. The PVB film can absorb some of the impact energy, preventing fragments from splashing.
  • High Explosion-Proof Safety: Even if the glass breaks due to external force, the PVB film will adhere the fragments to the film, maintaining the overall structural integrity and avoiding safety hazards caused by glass collapse due to water pressure.
  • Excellent Water Pressure Resistance: The PVB film is waterproof and can withstand long-term high-pressure underwater environments without delamination or adhesive failure due to changes in water pressure.

2. Limitations of Other Glass Types

  • Wired Glass: Although the internal metal wire mesh can prevent fragments from falling, it reduces the glass's light transmittance and may lead to structural failure due to metal fatigue under high water pressure.
  • Tempered Glass: Although it has high strength, it loses support after complete breakage and cannot withstand continuous water pressure impacts, posing safety risks.
  • Insulating Glass: Composed of two layers of glass with an air layer in between, it is mainly used for sound insulation and heat insulation and lacks pressure-resistant design, making it unsuitable for high-pressure underwater scenarios.

3. Support from Practical Application Cases

  • Aquarium Viewing Windows: Aquariums widely use tempered laminated glass for underwater viewing windows. For example, the deep-sea tunnel viewing window at the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium has a glass thickness of 30 centimeters and can withstand the pressure of several meters of water depth.
  • Container House Renovation: Some underwater container house projects (such as the "Floating Residences" in Rotterdam, the Netherlands) explicitly use tempered laminated glass as the material for viewing windows to ensure safety and durability.

4. Design Considerations for Viewing Windows in Container Houses
If renovating a container into an underwater house, the design of the viewing window should meet the following requirements:

  • Structural Reinforcement: Add a steel frame around the glass to distribute the water pressure's direct impact on the glass.
  • Sealing Treatment: Use silicone sealant or special underwater sealing strips to prevent water leakage.
  • Thickness Selection: Calculate the required glass thickness based on water depth. Generally, for every 1-meter increase in water depth, the glass thickness needs to increase by approximately 1 centimeter.
