Under-bridge Container House

Admin September 15, 2026

The usage of container houses under bridges is complex. Some are illegally occupied, posing safety hazards, while others, after reasonable planning and renovation, become legal and practical spaces.

Illegal Occupation of Bridge Under-spaces with Container Houses Poses Safety Risks

Under the Guanlianhu Road bridge in Junshan Subdistrict, Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone, container houses were once illegally set up, not only unlawfully occupying urban public space but also posing direct safety threats to the bridge structure through illegal occupancy, use of fire and electricity, etc. These container houses were unauthorized structures that violated relevant regulations such as the 'Wuhan City Bridge and Tunnel Safety Management Regulations' and constituted illegal acts endangering bridge safety. Similarly, the Beigang Special Bridge in Zhangzhou City was also illegally occupied, with five simple houses made from renovated containers stacked underneath, surrounded by numerous aquaculture tanks, suggesting that someone might be engaged in production and business activities here. Such acts of stacking items in bridge under-spaces can potentially cause bridge pier displacement, harming the highway; in the event of a fire, it can easily pose a threat to the safety of highway bridges and even vehicles traveling on the highway.

Reasonably Planned and Renovated Under-bridge Container Houses Have Practical Value

Some bridge under-spaces, after reasonable planning and renovation, can see container houses play a positive role. For example, in some bridge under-spaces in Shanghai, the renovated 'road maintenance houses' have been maximally integrated into the overall style of the surrounding communities, transforming into unique 'road dream spaces' and urban landscapes. The smart maintenance base under the Humin Elevated Road built by the Xuhui District Construction and Management Committee applies the 'urban coral reef' concept, setting up functional zones for various modules within the narrow base space, serving as an office space for smart inspection personnel, a standby point for emergency repair teams, and a training base for maintenance teams. The Shangzhongxi Road maintenance base uses container buildings, breaking away from the layout pattern of traditional road maintenance houses and becoming a new space that combines practicality and modernity. In Wuhan's 'Bridge Environment · Vitality Gathering' project, 18 containers are set up as independent business units, and some bridge under-spaces are equipped with containers as commercial supporting facilities to serve residents who come for entertainment and fitness.
