Two-Story Container House Stairs
The design of stairs for two-story container houses needs to comprehensively consider structural safety, space utilization, style adaptation, and regulatory requirements. Common types include steel-wood stairs and double-run stairs, with specific design points as follows:

1. Structural Safety and Material Selection
As the core of vertical transportation, stairs need to have sufficient load-bearing capacity and stability. Container house stairs usually adopt a steel-wood structure. For example, in the case of a two-story residential building renovated from four containers, the stairs are composed of a steel frame with wooden handrails, ensuring both strength and a warm atmosphere. The steel needs to be anti-corrosion treated, and the wooden parts need to be fire-resistant and moisture-proof to adapt to the temporary or long-term use scenarios of container houses. In addition, the connection between the stairs and the main container body needs to be fixed by welding or bolts to ensure the overall structural stability and prevent loosening due to vibration or wind.
2. Space Utilization and Size Design
The interior space of containers is limited, so stair design needs to be compact and efficient.
- Slope and Treads: The slope is generally controlled between 30° and 35°. It is recommended that the tread height be 15-18 cm and the width be 25-30 cm to conform to ergonomics and reduce climbing fatigue.
- Single-Run and Double-Run Selection: When the floor height is relatively low (e.g., 2.8-3 meters), a single-run stair can be used to directly connect the upper and lower floors, saving space. When the floor height is relatively high or an intermediate rest is required, a double-run stair is more suitable. It can relieve fatigue through an intermediate platform and also use the space below the platform for storage.
- Spiral Stairs: If the space is extremely compact, spiral stairs can be considered, but it is necessary to ensure that the tread width and spiral radius meet safety regulations.
3. Style Adaptation and Aesthetics
Stair design needs to be coordinated with the overall style of the container house.
- Industrial Style: Retain the original color of the steel and pair it with glass or wooden treads to highlight simplicity and modernity, such as the glass stairs in a fully transparent container house.
- Rustic Style: Use wooden treads and carved railings, paired with warm-toned lighting, to create a warm atmosphere.
- Minimalist Style: Use hidden handrails or floating treads to reduce visual oppression, suitable for small-sized container houses.
4. Regulations and Safety Requirements
Stair design needs to comply with building safety regulations, including:
- Handrail Height: Not less than 90 cm. It is recommended to be more than 1 meter in children's activity areas.
- Anti-Slip Treatment: The tread surface needs to be anti-slip treated, such as by grooving or laying anti-slip strips.
- Lighting Design: The stairwell needs to be equipped with sufficient lighting to avoid shadow areas and ensure safety during nighttime use.
- Emergency Evacuation: If used as the main escape route, the passage must be kept clear and not cluttered with objects.
