Portable Toilet

Admin September 26, 2026

A portable toilet is a facility that can be moved as a whole and provides toilet services to the public. It is suitable for fixed or temporary locations such as stations, construction sites, and squares, and has the advantages of being movable, combinable, and easy to transport.

I. Basic Composition and Material Evolution A portable toilet is generally composed of a fecal sewage storage tank (or disposal device), floor, sanitary ware, walls, washing equipment, water tank, roof, and moving device. Early portable toilets were made of wood, which had problems such as simple construction and easy absorption of odors. Modern portable toilets gradually use materials such as fiberglass and polyethylene, improving durability and odor resistance. For example, fiberglass has the characteristics of being lightweight, strong, and corrosion-resistant, while polyethylene has the advantages of being impact-resistant and easy to clean. The application of these materials significantly extends the service life of portable toilets.

II. Classification by Structure and Moving Method There are two types according to structural form:

  1. Single-unit portable toilets: Designed as independent units, suitable for scenarios with limited space or temporary needs, such as small event sites.
  2. Composite-structure portable toilets: Composed of multiple units, they can be expanded into multi-toilet facilities to meet the needs of high-traffic locations, such as tourist attractions. There are three types according to moving method:
  3. Lifting and handling type: Lifted and transported as a whole by lifting equipment, suitable for flat ground.
  4. Powered and towed type: Equipped with a power system or towable design, it is easy to be towed by vehicles and suitable for long-distance transportation.
  5. Non-powered type: Relies on manual handling or simple mechanical assistance, suitable for short-distance and small-scale movement.

III. Classification by Sewage Treatment Method

  1. Flush and non-flush suction type: Feces are discharged into the storage tank through flushing or vacuum suction and need to be cleaned regularly, suitable for locations with a water source.
  2. Recirculating flush type: Uses biodegradation or chemical treatment technology to purify sewage, enabling water resource recycling and having strong environmental protection properties.
  3. Dry-packing type: Uses degradable bags to collect feces, requiring no water source, suitable for water-scarce or high environmental protection requirement areas, such as desert tourist attractions.

IV. Special Cases and DIY Practices In addition to standardized products, personal DIY portable toilets are also not uncommon. For example, a young man used materials such as buckets and wooden boards to make a movable toilet by installing a base, fixing the buckets, and cutting entrances and exits. There are also cases where a water storage tank combined with solar panels is used to provide lighting and warm water supply functions. Although these practices are on a small scale, they reflect the flexibility and innovation in the design of portable toilets.
