How to Move Blockages When the Toilet is Clogged

Admin September 27, 2026

When the toilet is clogged, blockages can be moved using methods such as physical unclogging, chemical dissolution, or hot water flushing. If the toilet clogs repeatedly or the problem is complex, contact a professional for handling.

Physical Unclogging

Physical methods involve directly moving or breaking up blockages through mechanical action, suitable for most common clogging scenarios.

  • Plunger Pressing: Align a rubber plunger with the toilet drain opening, ensuring the edges are completely sealed against the toilet base. Press rapidly and repeatedly, using air pressure to loosen the blockage. Maintain the seal during operation to prevent air leakage from affecting the results.
  • Mop Pumping: If the plunger is ineffective, use a floor mop instead. Align the mop with the drain opening, pour half a basin of water into the toilet, and then rapidly pump the mop up and down. This alternates suction and pressure to unclog the pipe. This method is suitable for shallow blockages.
  • Direct Cleaning: If the blockage consists of visible solid residues (such as toilet paper or toys), wear waterproof gloves and reach in to clean it out directly. Turn off the toilet's water supply before operation to prevent污水 (sewage) from splashing out.
  • Spring Auger: Insert a metal spring auger into the pipe and rotate it forward to hook or break up the blockage. Metal auger rods are suitable for hard blockages (such as bones or plastic), while plastic conduits are better for curved pipes to avoid scratching the interior.

Chemical Dissolution

Chemical methods involve using dissolving agents to break down organic matter, suitable for soft blockages like grease or feces.

  • Pipe Dissolving Agent: Choose a dissolving agent containing sodium hydroxide or enzyme preparations. Pour it into the toilet according to the instructions and let it sit for 30-60 minutes. Sodium hydroxide corrodes organic matter through its strong alkalinity, while enzyme preparations gradually dissolve blockages through biological decomposition. After dissolution, flush the pipe with plenty of water.
  • Strong Dissolving Agent: There are specialized strong dissolving agents on the market for toilet clogs, with higher ingredient concentrations and faster dissolution rates. Before use, confirm that the toilet material (such as ceramic or plastic) can withstand chemical corrosion to avoid damaging the pipe.

Hot Water Flushing

If the blockage consists of materials easily soluble in water, such as paper or feces, first pour several basins of hot water (about 60-70°C) into the toilet to soften the blockage, then flush vigorously. Hot water accelerates the decomposition of organic matter, but be careful not to use water that is too hot to prevent the toilet's glaze from cracking due to thermal expansion and contraction.

Professional Handling

If the toilet clogs repeatedly or unclogging is ineffective, it may be due to abnormal pipe structure (such as bent elbow deformation or loose PVC joints) or foreign object retention (such as root intrusion or construction debris). In this case, use an endoscope to inspect the pipe. If structural damage is found, replace the affected section; if foreign objects remain, use professional equipment to remove them. For stubborn clogs or deep pipe problems, contact a licensed unclogging service. Professionals are equipped with high-pressure water guns, air pumps, and pipe robots to handle complex situations.
