Thickness Requirements for Beams in Prefabricated Panel Houses

Admin September 18, 2026

The thickness requirements for beams in prefabricated panel houses are typically determined by load-bearing needs, material type, and span length, and must be comprehensively determined in conjunction with specifications and actual working conditions.

1. Classification by Material Type

  1. Concrete Beams

    • Household Scenarios: The thickness of ordinary concrete beams generally ranges from 200-300mm, with household beams commonly using 15-30cm of concrete thickness. For factory equipment load-bearing beams, thickening to 30-50cm is required to handle higher loads.
    • Cross-Section Design: According to the 'Code for Design of Concrete Structures' (GB50010), the beam height must meet a minimum requirement of 1/15 of the span. In actual design, the cross-section width is usually determined based on 1/12-1/8 of the beam height. For example, for a beam with a span of 6 meters, the recommended beam height is 400-750mm (6000mm×1/15 to 6000mm×1/8), with the thickness requiring further adjustment based on the load.
  2. Steel Structure Beams

    • I-Beam Web Height: The web height of steel structure I-beams is calculated as 1/20-1/30 of the span. For example, for a steel structure beam with a 6-meter span, it is recommended to select an I-beam with a web height of 20-30cm, with specific optimization based on load distribution and connection methods.

2. Adjustment Based on Load Conditions

  1. Conventional Housing: If designed with a live load of 2kN/m², the main beam cross-section can be controlled at 250×600mm (width×height).
  2. Heavy-Load Scenarios: When heavy items such as bathtubs or large equipment are added on the second floor, the live load may increase to 4kN/m². In this case, it is recommended to thicken the main beam to 300×700mm and configure a double-layer steel mesh to enhance bending resistance.

3. Requirements for Prefabricated Beam Formwork

The thickness of prefabricated beam formwork must not be less than 6mm. This standard aims to ensure that the formwork has sufficient strength and stiffness to withstand the lateral pressure and vibration loads during concrete pouring, avoiding deformation or damage, thereby ensuring the geometric dimensional accuracy and surface flatness of the prefabricated beams.

4. Other Considerations

  1. Specification Restrictions: Traditional prefabricated hollow panels (such as those commonly used in rural buildings) have been largely replaced by cast-in-place structures in new construction due to poor seismic performance and insufficient integrity. Their use should be avoided in design.
  2. Deformation Control: In actual engineering, structural verification must be conducted using professional software to ensure that the deflection deformation of the beam is controlled within 1/250 of the span, avoiding excessive deformation that may affect functionality or structural safety.

Summary: The thickness of beams in prefabricated panel houses must be comprehensively determined based on parameters such as material type, span, and load. The thickness range for concrete beams is 200-700mm, and the web height for steel structure beams is 20-30cm (for a 6-meter span), while also meeting the minimum thickness requirements for formwork and deformation control. Specific design should be completed by a professional structural engineer and comply with current specifications and standards.
