The Story in the Container House

Admin September 16, 2026

During the Nagoya Asian Games, numerous incidents occurred in the container houses due to harsh living conditions and rainstorm disasters.

Cramped living space and rudimentary facilities: Each unit of the container-style temporary housing covered only 35 square meters but had to accommodate four beds. The aisles were extremely narrow, allowing only sideways movement. In double-bed rooms, the aisle between the two beds was so narrow that only one person could stand. The height of the containers was also low, and one could easily hit the ceiling when looking up. This cramped space brought great inconvenience to the athletes' daily lives and restricted their range of activities.

Unreasonable bed sizes: The beds in the container-renovated houses where the Chinese men's basketball team members stayed were only 1.95 meters long and 90 centimeters wide. For team members over two meters tall, their legs could only hang off the edge of the bed. Moreover, three tall athletes were crammed into one room, sharing one toilet, one shower room, and only one air conditioner for the whole house. The container cabins where the South Korean men's basketball team members stayed also had the problem of short beds, and athletes over two meters tall couldn't even stretch their legs when lying in bed.

Rainstorm-induced disasters: On September 9, Nagoya experienced the strongest rainfall in its observation history. Due to the container houses being located in low-lying areas of the port district, the rainstorm caused water to back up and the houses to leak. About 400 athletes and staff members staying in the container-renovated houses were urgently evacuated to higher ground. The Chinese men's basketball team's scheduled pre-game training was directly washed out by the rainstorm, and they didn't touch the ball all day. Their tactics could only be reviewed through mobile phone videos.

Indoor facility malfunctions: The container cabins where the South Korean men's basketball team members stayed not only had bed problems but also had leaking sinks in the rooms, wetting the floors. This further worsened the living environment, affected the athletes' normal lives and rest, and also had a certain potential impact on their competition performance.
