What Size of Container Can Accommodate Four Houses

Admin September 17, 2026

The containers suitable for accommodating four houses are mainly 40-foot standard containers (40GP) and 40-foot high-cube containers (40HQ), whose internal spaces can meet basic layout requirements but need to be adjusted according to functional design.

1. 40-Foot Standard Container (40GP)

The internal dimensions of this type of container are approximately 12.0 meters (length) × 2.3 meters (width) × 2.3 meters (height), with a theoretical volume of about 67 cubic meters and an actual usable volume of about 54 to 58 cubic meters. Its space design can accommodate the basic layout of four houses, for example:

  • Single-story layout: If each house functions as an independent space (such as a bedroom, living room, kitchen, and bathroom), partitions can be used to divide the area. However, it is important to note that furniture dimensions need to fit the container width (2.3 meters) to avoid a cramped space.
  • Height limitation: The standard container height is 2.3 meters. If a suspended ceiling or complex piping needs to be installed, the actual usable height may be further reduced, requiring advance planning.
  • Applicable scenarios: Suitable for transporting furniture and appliances for ordinary residences or serving as temporary living spaces (such as construction site dormitories and post-disaster shelters). However, for long-term residence, ventilation and lighting designs need to be optimized.

2. 40-Foot High-Cube Container (40HQ)

The internal dimensions of the high-cube container are approximately 12.0 meters (length) × 2.3 meters (width) × 2.6 meters (height), with a theoretical volume of about 76 cubic meters and an actual usable volume of about 68 cubic meters. Its advantages include:

  • Additional height: It is 0.3 meters taller than the standard container, allowing for the installation of taller furniture or the addition of a mezzanine design (such as a loft bedroom) to improve space utilization.
  • Functional expandability: Suitable for functional areas requiring vertical space, such as houses with high-ceilinged living rooms, double-story office spaces, or mixed-use spaces for storage and living.
  • Ventilation optimization: The taller space facilitates the design of a natural ventilation system, improving the airtightness issues of container houses.

3. Renovation Considerations

Regardless of which container is chosen, the following key considerations should be taken into account when renovating it into four houses:

  1. Structural reinforcement: Containers are originally designed for transportation and need to be reinforced with welded steel beams and additional support columns to ensure structural stability after renovation.
  2. Thermal insulation: The metal body of the container has strong thermal conductivity, so thermal insulation materials such as rock wool and polyurethane need to be added, and double-glazed windows should be installed to improve energy efficiency.
  3. Compliance: It is necessary to comply with local building codes (such as fire protection and earthquake resistance standards). In some areas, special permits may be required when using container houses as permanent buildings.

Summary: The 40-foot standard container is suitable for the basic layout of four houses, while the high-cube container provides more flexible design space by increasing the height. Both can meet living needs through reasonable planning, but a comprehensive choice needs to be made based on functionality, budget, and regulations.
