Prefabricated Slab Cover for Self-Built House Roof
Using prefabricated slab covers for the roof of a self-built house has the advantages of low cost and fast construction, but it also has problems such as easy cracking of joints, poor waterproofing, poor earthquake resistance, and poor thermal insulation.

Advantages:
The price of prefabricated slab covers is relatively low, and the construction speed is very fast. For example, for a roof area of 40 - 50 square meters, the total cost of using floor slabs is more than 800 yuan, and the merchant selling the floor slabs is also responsible for the lifting process, which can be completed in one day or half a day. This characteristic of fast construction is very attractive for some self-built house projects with tight schedules or limited budgets.
Disadvantages:
- Easy cracking of joints: The joints between two floor slabs are the most likely places to have problems. Due to the imperfect treatment of the joints or the influence of factors such as building settlement and temperature changes, the joints are prone to cracking.
- Prominent waterproofing problems: There is a relatively high probability of rain leakage when waterproofing is done on prefabricated slab covers. In rural areas where prefabricated slabs are used as roofs, rain leakage is relatively common, and even the professional waterproofing industry cannot guarantee 100% no leakage. This is mainly because there may be some tiny pores in the joints between the prefabricated slabs and the slab surface itself, resulting in poor waterproofing performance.
- Poor earthquake resistance: The earthquake resistance coefficient of prefabricated slabs is low, and they cannot be used in areas with frequent earthquakes. In the event of an earthquake, prefabricated slabs are prone to collapse due to loose connections, posing a serious threat to the safety of people and property inside the house.
- Poor thermal insulation: The thickness of prefabricated floor slabs is generally about 12 centimeters. Although they are hollow, their thermal insulation performance is poor. In summer, the temperature inside the house will be relatively high; in winter, the indoor temperature will be relatively low. To improve this situation, it is generally necessary to cover the floor slabs with secondary roofing materials, such as laying insulation boards.
There are various types and prices of prefabricated floor slabs on the market. For example, hollow prefabricated floor slabs, concrete load-bearing floor slabs, concrete prestressed cover slabs for house construction, and round-hole floor slabs are priced at 36.0 yuan per meter; reinforced concrete hollow slabs for factory and civilian house floor and roof prefabricated slabs are priced at 24.0 yuan per meter, etc.
