Seismic Design of Container Houses

Admin September 15, 2026

The seismic design of container houses requires comprehensive consideration from multiple aspects such as structural frames, connection joints, and reinforcement measures to ensure their stability and safety during earthquakes.

Structural frames are the foundation for seismic resistance. Most mainstream container houses adopt all-steel structural frames. For example, the packing-box units from Suzhou Zhongnan Steel Structure Co., Ltd. have an all-steel structural frame that can achieve a seismic resistance rating of up to 8 in actual tests, meeting the requirements of GB50011-2010 Code for Seismic Design of Buildings. Under extreme conditions, the frame shows no significant deformation. All-steel structures have high strength and toughness, effectively resisting the horizontal and vertical forces generated by earthquakes and providing stable support for the houses.

The design of connection joints is crucial. Taking the example of Yiqi Container Mobile House Company, considering the local seismic fortification intensity of 7 degrees, a dual-fixing mode of 'wedge-shaped lock + high-strength bolts' is introduced at the container connections. The wedge-shaped lock is made of 45# steel through heat treatment, with a slope angle of 15 degrees, which can produce a self-locking effect under horizontal shear forces. Actual tests show that during vibration table tests simulating a rare 8-degree earthquake, the displacement of this joint is controlled within 3 millimeters, which is about 40% better than the deformation amplitude of conventional welded joints. Moreover, this detachable connection method facilitates repeated assembly during secondary relocation, reducing the generation of construction waste.

Reinforcement measures can enhance seismic performance. For areas with harsh usage environments and high earthquake risks, container houses can be reinforced. For example, the container house products from Chengdong Camp can withstand an earthquake intensity of 8 degrees. For the main load-bearing members such as beams and columns, the cross-sections can be enlarged or reinforcement fittings can be added at the main load-bearing joints. In terms of external structural auxiliary reinforcement, measures such as adding wind-resistant cables can be taken. At the same time, the enclosure materials can be reinforced, such as adding structural purlins and increasing the density of fixed self-tapping screws to ensure the safe use of the houses.
