How to Build a Mobile Toilet in Rural Areas

Admin October 02, 2026

The following methods can be referred to for building a mobile toilet in rural areas, mainly divided into two types of plans: water storage tank modification and material selection:

I. Water Storage Tank Modification Plan (Low-Cost DIY)

  1. Basic Structure Construction

    • Select a discarded water storage tank as the main body and use an angle grinder to cut it longitudinally along the centerline of the tank to form two half-tanks.
    • Install universal wheels at the four corners of a wooden board. Fix wooden strips to the upper edge of the tank with self-tapping screws to form an elevated frame (with a height of about 1.5 - 1.8 meters).
    • Cut out a doorway on the side of the tank. Paste sponge strips on both sides to form a door frame. Insert plastic soft boards as walls and cover the top with a half-tank as a roof.
    • Paint the surface with white waterproof paint to improve weather resistance and aesthetics.
  2. Functional System Installation

    • Drainage System: Drill a hole at the bottom of the tank and install a drain pipe (with a diameter of 50mm) connected to a sewage tank. Drill a hole on the side and install a three-way joint to connect the shower inlet pipe and the washbasin water supply pipe respectively.
    • Water Storage Device: Invert a small plastic bucket on the roof and connect it to indoor water equipment through a hose to form a simple water storage tank.
    • Sanitary Facilities: Place a toilet and fix the water tank. Seal the joint with glass glue. Use foam strips to splice honeycomb panels to make door panels. Drill a hole on the door to install a faucet joint.
    • Auxiliary Equipment: Make a simple bathroom heater bracket with a water pipe and connect it to the three-way joint to provide hot water.

II. Material Selection Plan (Standardized Construction)

  1. Selection of Main Materials

    • Metal Sheets: Use galvanized steel sheets or aluminum alloys, which have high strength and corrosion resistance but are relatively heavy (about 80 - 120kg) and require heavy-duty universal wheels.
    • Plastic Materials: Select high-density polyethylene (HDPE), which is lightweight (about 30 - 50kg) and easy to handle, but requires the addition of UV stabilizers to enhance anti-aging performance.
    • Composite Materials: Fiberglass reinforced plastics (FRP) or aluminum-plastic panels combine the strength of metals with the lightweight advantage of plastics and have a service life of more than 10 years.
  2. Key Points of Functional Configuration

    • Weather Resistance: External materials need to pass the temperature difference test from -30℃ to 60℃. Antibacterial coatings (such as nano silver ions) are used inside to inhibit bacterial growth.
    • Sealing Performance: Use silicone sealing strips at the joints between the door frame and the wall. The drain pipe adopts an anti-odor floor drain design to prevent odor diffusion.
    • Modular Design: Reserve standardized interfaces to facilitate the later upgrade of equipment such as solar power supply and intelligent flushing systems.

Precautions:

  • For the water storage tank plan, regularly check the blockage of the drain pipe. It is recommended to clean it every 3 months.
  • For toilets made of metal materials, apply anti-rust paint every year. For those made of plastic materials, avoid long-term exposure to the sun to prevent embrittlement.
  • The cost of toilets made of composite materials is relatively high (about 2000 - 5000 yuan), but the maintenance cost can be reduced by more than 40%.
