Using Prefabricated Panels on Rural House Roofs

Admin September 19, 2026

Prefabricated panels can be used on rural house roofs, but potential hazards must be carefully evaluated and certain restrictions met. Due to their cost-effectiveness and ease of construction, prefabricated panels are still used in rural self-built houses, but their structural flaws require significant attention. A detailed analysis is as follows:

1. Cost-Effectiveness and Construction Advantages
Prefabricated panels are inexpensive and highly efficient in construction. The total cost for a 40-50 square meter roof is approximately 800 yuan, and some suppliers offer lifting services, allowing installation to be completed within a day. This makes them a choice for those with limited budgets or tight schedules.

2. Key Hazards to Be Aware Of

  • Poor Waterproofing: Joints exist between prefabricated panels, which are prone to cracking due to thermal expansion and contraction or foundation settlement, leading to a high risk of water leakage. Even with professional waterproofing treatments, leaks may still occur during the rainy season, requiring regular maintenance.
  • Weak Earthquake Resistance: Prefabricated panels are separate from the walls, making them prone to detachment and collapse during earthquakes. They are not suitable for earthquake-prone areas.
  • Insufficient Insulation: Hollow prefabricated panels, 12 centimeters thick, have poor thermal insulation properties. In summer, indoor temperatures are significantly higher than outdoors, while in winter, it is colder inside. Additional insulation layers (such as slag or cement) are needed for improvement.
  • Low Overall Stability: Prefabricated panels are simply placed on the walls without any connection, making them susceptible to roof cracks due to uneven foundation settlement, posing structural safety risks.

3. Usage Recommendations and Alternative Solutions

  • Prioritize Cast-in-Place Roofs: If the budget allows, cast-in-place concrete roofs (costing over 3000 yuan for 40-50 square meters) are significantly superior to prefabricated panels in terms of integrity, waterproofing, and earthquake resistance, offering greater long-term safety and reliability.
  • Strictly Evaluate Suitability Conditions: If prefabricated panels must be used, ensure that the house is located in a geologically stable area (not an earthquake zone) with good foundation bearing capacity, and accept defects such as water leakage and poor insulation.
  • Use in Layers or Locally: Reduce risks through structural design, such as using prefabricated panels in non-residential areas (e.g., storage rooms) or combining them with cast-in-place structures.

Summary: Prefabricated panels are suitable for short-term, low-budget, or non-core functional areas, but their hazards must be weighed. For long-term residence or in areas with complex geological conditions, cast-in-place roofs are a better choice.
