Rural Container Renovation House
Admin September 15, 2026
When renovating container houses in rural areas, it is necessary to comprehensively consider factors such as legality, safety, living comfort, and cost.

Legality
- Is it an illegal construction: Whether a container house is considered an illegal construction depends on local regulations. Generally, due to its movable and non-fixed nature, it is often regarded as a temporary building. In many places, it is allowed to be erected and removed without a permit, but there are also places that consider it an illegal construction. For example, Danyang City's Danbei Town included illegally renovated container houses rented out for living in the town's key safety hazard investigation list and launched a special rectification campaign, indicating that some illegally renovated container houses are not allowed.
Safety
- Structural and material hazards: Illegally renovated containers used for living are full of hidden dangers. Most of these containers are built with flammable sandwich panels, and their fire resistance ratings do not meet the standards. Once a fire breaks out, the flames spread rapidly, and it is easy to produce toxic smoke, making escape difficult.
- Electrical and gas risks: Containers generally have problems such as unauthorized wiring, mixed use of high-power electrical appliances, and the use of bottled gas indoors, posing prominent risks of electric shock and fire.
- Occupation of public space: Some containers illegally occupy collective land and rural roads, blocking fire exits. This not only constitutes illegal construction but also frequently triggers neighborhood disputes.
Living Comfort
- Thermal insulation: The thermal insulation performance of container houses is relatively poor. Without professional thermal insulation treatment, they may be cold in winter and hot in summer. However, this problem can be improved by using appropriate thermal insulation materials and construction techniques, such as double-layer rock wool insulation inside.
- Ventilation and drainage: Poor design can affect the living experience. For example, poor ventilation can lead to poor indoor air quality, and poor drainage can cause roof leaks and damp corners. However, these problems can be effectively solved by reasonably designing windows and reserving drainage outlets.
Cost
- Cost advantages: In terms of cost, container houses have certain advantages. Their cost is comparable to that of brick-and-mortar houses and is even more economical in some cases. For example, in one case, six containers were used to easily complete the main structure, and a villa with a total building area of about 150 square meters, including hard decoration, could be obtained for 200,000 yuan.
- Renovation costs: To live comfortably later, it is also necessary to invest a certain amount of financial and human resources in interior and exterior decoration, water and electricity wiring, and thermal insulation.
