Red Wall Mobile Toilet

Admin September 21, 2026

Currently, there are no publicly available documents or mature cases directly targeting the overall design of the 'Red Wall Mobile Toilet', but relevant insights can be gained from the layout of the toilet rooms in the Forbidden City and temporary excretion scenarios during events.

The Forbidden City, as the imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties, does not have fixed toilets in the modern sense within its architectural complex, but it has a unique system of 'mobile commodes'. The toilet rooms, which are used for disposing of excreta, are mostly hidden in corners, with some located near the red wall areas. For example, there are toilet rooms distributed in locations such as the north of the Zhongcui Palace in the East Six Palaces and the west of the Chuxiu Palace in the West Six Palaces. These toilet rooms rely on the concealment of the red walls to meet usage needs while not undermining the overall beauty and solemnity of the palace. Their design features include: Concealment, by being sited in architectural corners or secluded areas to reduce interference with the main sightseeing routes; Functionality, using movable commodes or urinals for easy regular cleaning and maintenance; Integration with the red walls, with wall colors consistent with the palace architecture to avoid a jarring appearance.

During the 2013 Beijing International Marathon, due to the insufficient number of mobile toilets set up by the organizers, some runners relieved themselves against the red walls and in the green belts, triggering the 'urinating against the red walls' public health incident. Although this scenario is a negative example, it indirectly reflects the feasibility of using the red wall area as a temporary excretion site. The problems lie in: Lack of planning, failing to assess the flow of people and excretion needs in advance; Lack of management, not arranging for dedicated personnel to guide or clean up; Damage to the environment, with excreta directly exposed on the red walls and in the green belts, affecting hygiene and the landscape.

If designing a 'Red Wall Mobile Toilet', one can draw on the concealed layout of the toilet rooms in the Forbidden City, choosing to set it up in secondary passageways or architectural corners beside the red walls; adopting a modular design for easy and quick installation and disassembly; keeping the wall color consistent with the red walls for visual unity; and at the same time, equipping it with a complete sewage system and a regular cleaning mechanism to avoid repeating the hygiene problems that occurred during the event.
