Railway Container Transformation House

Admin September 15, 2026

Railway container transformation houses are environmentally friendly building units that can be repeatedly disassembled and assembled by optimizing structural mechanics, improving material thermal properties, and innovating assembly processes, transforming steel shipping containers into such units.

1. Structural Mechanics Optimization
The traditional container's bottom frame has large spacing between the longitudinal beams, which can lead to insufficient floor stiffness when used directly as living space. During transformation, C-shaped steel purlins are added between the bottom beams to evenly distribute the load to the main beams, enabling the container to maintain structural stability even when stacked three layers high. For example, Baotou Xinxing Color Plate Steel Structure Manufacturing Co., Ltd. adopted this method to solve the load-bearing problem of multi-layer stacking. Additionally, the container surface is shot-blasted to remove rust and then coated with a zinc-rich primer and polyurethane topcoat, forming a protective system that maintains the effective service life of the steel for more than 15 years in environments with northwest wind and sand and temperature variations.

2. Material Thermal Property Improvement
The cold bridge effect of the metal container wall is a major challenge for thermal insulation. The conventional method of attaching insulation boards on the inner side tends to create heat conduction channels at the steel framework. The improved solution adopts a broken-bridge lining structure: hard polyurethane foam is filled between the steel framework and the inner wall panels, and rubber thermal insulation pads are added at the framework connections, reducing the heat exchange efficiency between the inside and outside of the container by about 40%. For camp dormitory projects, the indoor temperature can be 8 to 10 degrees Celsius higher than the outside temperature in winter without heating, significantly reducing heating equipment energy consumption.

3. Environmental Protection and Recycling
The core environmental value of container houses lies in the full life-cycle recycling of materials. Each standard 20-foot container consumes about 1.2 tons of steel, while the carbon emissions of a one-time poured concrete temporary house of the same area are 2.3 times higher. The transformed container houses can be hoisted as a whole to a new site, with the disassembly and assembly loss rate controlled within 5%. In contrast, traditional prefabricated houses require the replacement of a large number of panels during each disassembly and assembly, generating a large amount of construction waste. Additionally, some container houses integrate a self-circulating sewage system that treats gray water (bath and washing water) and black water (toilet sewage) through a sewage collection tank and a gravity separator. The gray water is used for vegetation irrigation after sedimentation and activated carbon filtration, while the black water is converted into liquid fertilizer through anaerobic fermentation by microbial agents, achieving water self-sufficiency.

4. Modular Design and Rapid Deployment
Container houses adopt a modular design and are prefabricated in the factory and then transported to the site for direct installation, eliminating the need for a long construction period. For example, the products of Xi'an Tengdaxing Housing Engineering Co., Ltd. can be completed and installed in 3-7 days, far exceeding the construction efficiency of traditional prefabricated houses. Their steel framework has wind, earthquake, rain, and flame-retardant properties, with a service life of more than 20 years. They are also highly mobile, have low foundation requirements, and can be relocated at any time according to needs.
