Portable Toilet: Types, Features & Buying Tips
Admin October 24, 2026
Portable toilets are mainly classified into different types based on structure, mobility, and sewage treatment methods. They feature specific components, materials, and portability, and factors such as purpose, capacity, and durability should be considered when purchasing.

Types of Portable Toilets
- Classification by Structure: This includes single-unit and compound-unit designs. Single-unit structures are simple and suitable for individual or small-scale use; compound units integrate more functions, such as sinks or independent water storage systems, and are suitable for multi-person scenarios.
- Classification by Mobility: These are divided into hoistable/transportable types and electric/trailer types. The former rely on manual or mechanical handling and are suitable for temporary sites; the latter are more conveniently moved through electric drive or vehicle towing and are commonly used for large events or long-term projects.
- Classification by Sewage Treatment Method:
- Flush/Non-flush Suction Type: These treat excreta through flushing or vacuum suction and require regular cleaning of the fecal storage tank.
- Recirculating Flush Type: These utilize chemical agents or biotechnology to purify sewage, enabling water recycling and reducing emissions.
- Dry Seal Type: These use sealed bags or chemicals to solidify excreta, requiring no water and being suitable for water-scarce environments.
Key Features of Portable Toilets
- Component Composition: They typically include a fecal storage tank (or treatment device), floor, sanitary facilities (such as toilets), walls, sinks, water tanks, roofs, and mobility devices. Some high-end models are equipped with ventilation systems or lighting.
- Material Upgrades: Modern products often use fiberglass-reinforced plastics or polyethylene instead of traditional wooden structures, effectively preventing odor penetration and being easy to clean.
- Portable Design: Lightweight materials and foldable structures (such as foldable toilets) facilitate transportation. Some models can be disassembled into multiple components to adapt to different site requirements.
- Reusability: Modular designs support multiple disassemblies and reconfigurations, reducing long-term use costs.
Practical Tips for Buying Portable Toilets
- Clarify Purpose: Choose the type based on the scenario. For camping, dry-seal or lightweight types are recommended; construction sites require large-capacity flush types; and public events need compound units or trailer types.
- Evaluate Capacity: Select the size of the fecal storage tank based on the number of users and frequency of use to avoid frequent cleaning. For example, a 5-10 liter capacity is suitable for solo camping, while large events require 50 liters or more.
- Focus on Durability: Prioritize polyethylene materials, which have better corrosion and UV resistance than plastics and have smooth surfaces that do not easily retain stains.
- Consider Mobility Needs: If frequent handling is required, choose a foldable type weighing less than 20 kilograms; for fixed use, a wheeled trailer type can be selected to reduce labor costs.
- Additional Features: Add accessories according to needs, such as leak-proof bags, deodorizers, paper towel holders, or adjustable-height toilet seats, to enhance the user experience.
