Qianhai Container House

Admin September 15, 2026

Qianhai has multiple connections with container houses and industries, covering areas such as historical office use, industrial agglomeration, and dock construction.

Container Applications in Historical Office Scenarios

On December 7, 2012, General Secretary Xi Jinping inspected Qianhai. To accelerate Qianhai's development, the Qianhai Authority decided to work on-site in Qianhai. However, at that time, most of Qianhai was tidal flats with no ready-made buildings for office use. So, the authority's staff came up with a solution: they used 333 retired containers to assemble six two-story makeshift buildings as an “office complex” and relocated to Qianwan 1st Road within the Qianhai Cooperation Zone in 2013. From 2013 to 2022, the Qianhai Authority continued to operate from these container buildings. This “container headquarters” witnessed Qianhai's growth. Amid the ebb and flow of Qianhai Bay and the roar of surrounding construction sites, it launched an average of one institutional innovation every three days, earning Qianhai the nickname of a “new special zone” that emerged from “containers.”

Container Elements in High-End Shipping Industries

Qianhai's high-end shipping industry is thriving. Currently, there are 32 vessels registered under the “China Qianhai” flag, ranking among the top three in scale among all free trade zones in the country. Industry leaders such as Mediterranean Shipping Company, the world's largest container shipping company, have settled in Qianhai, making it a core hub for the agglomeration of high-end shipping elements in China. Meanwhile, the container throughput at the ports in the Qianhai Shekou Free Trade Zone has achieved remarkable results, with a cumulative total of 117 million TEUs from 2015 to 2024.

Dock Construction and Container-Related Planning

Qianhai has the second-phase project (southern section) of the container terminal at the Dachan Bay Port Area. Located in the Dachan Bay Port Area of Xixiang Street, this project has obtained a Construction Land Planning Permit, and a company has applied to modify its construction land planning permit. In addition, CIMC, a company with approximately a 40% share of the global container market, has established its global headquarters in Qianhai, Shenzhen. Although the architectural style of this headquarters has sparked some discussions about corporate identity, it also reflects the development layout of a container industry giant in Qianhai.
