Pudong Portable Toilets
Pudong New Area has developed multi-dimensional innovative practices in portable toilets, covering aspects such as facility upgrades, human-centered design, and industrial support.

I. 2024 Mobile Toilet Renewal Project
Pudong New Area has initiated a procurement and renewal plan for seven mobile toilets, covering areas such as Puyi Road and Puao Road, as well as the 572 bus stop on Yongtai Road. The new toilets adopt a separate setup for men's and women's restrooms and are individually equipped with a third restroom and barrier-free access, meeting the needs of special groups such as people with disabilities and families. The total investment for the project is 2.485 million yuan, with 1.8 million yuan allocated from the 2024 fiscal budget and the remaining funds included in the 2025 budget, reflecting the government's planned long-term investment in public facilities.
II. Refined Design of Renewed Toilets
- Environmental Integration and Visual Optimization: Seven toilets, including those on Haitong Road and Meihua Road, feature light beige and light brown as the primary colors, paired with dark blue borders. This design not only harmonizes with the surrounding environment but also enhances visibility through color contrast.
- Comprehensive Barrier-Free Facilities: Barrier-free access and stainless steel handrails have been added in high-traffic areas to ensure safe passage for wheelchair users and the elderly.
- Age-Friendly and Child-Friendly Modifications: Auxiliary handrails have been installed in restrooms to optimize turning space for wheelchairs. The children's area features customized designs, such as lowered sink heights and small toilets. Electronic screens on restroom doors display real-time usage status to prevent awkward misentries.
- Support for Sanitation Workers: A restroom at the intersection of Century Avenue and Weifang Road includes a "Sanitation Workers' Lounge" equipped with a refrigerator, shower, and microwave, providing a rest space for sanitation workers. Plans to expand coverage in the future reflect the humanistic warmth of public services.
III. Local Industrial Support
Shanghai Shijie Energy-Saving Environmental Protection Technology Engineering Co., Ltd., a local enterprise in Pudong New Area, specializes in the research, development, and production of eco-friendly and energy-saving toilets. It offers services such as rental and sales of mobile toilets, as well as temporary toilet rentals for construction sites. Its base on Xinfeng Road provides industrial support for the rapid deployment and maintenance of mobile toilets in the region, forming a closed loop of "government planning - enterprise implementation - public benefit."
Pudong New Area's practices demonstrate that mobile toilets have evolved from simple sanitation facilities into comprehensive public spaces that integrate barrier-free design, age-friendly and child-friendly features, and care for special groups. Their renewal model and industrial support offer a replicable example for urban public services.
