Prefabricated Steel Structure Housing

Admin September 17, 2026

Prefabricated steel structure housing is a type of residential building that uses a steel structure system as the main load-bearing structure and typically adopts a prefabricated construction method. The following is an introduction from multiple aspects:

Technical System: It consists of a structural system, an exterior enclosure system, a mechanical and piping system, and an interior decoration system. The structural system commonly uses forms such as steel frames, steel frame-bracing, or steel frame-core tube. The frame columns are made of profiled steel or concrete-filled steel tubular columns, the beams are profiled steel beams, the floor is made of composite slabs or steel bar truss floor decking, and prefabricated stairs are also used. The exterior walls of the exterior enclosure system use autoclaved aerated concrete panels, integrated composite wall panels, etc. The interior decoration system adopts prefabricated decoration, and the interior partition walls use panel-type or light steel keel-type walls.

Advantages:

  • Performance: It has good seismic performance and can withstand earthquake disasters; it is green and low-carbon, meeting environmental protection requirements; it has high space utilization and can reasonably plan indoor space; the layout is flexible and can be adjusted according to needs; the materials can be recycled, reducing resource waste.
  • Construction: Components are standardized and factory-produced, ensuring quality; on-site prefabricated construction is fast, shortening the construction period.
  • Living: The implicit frame steel structure residential technical system has been developed to solve the problem of protruding beams and columns in traditional steel structures; the concrete-filled steel tubular bundle structure residential building system effectively solves the problem of exposed beams and columns indoors, improving living quality.

Development History: It started early internationally, with practical applications in the 1930s. After World War II, Europe began to adopt industrialized housing construction methods, and since then, many countries have successively developed and applied it. China has gone through a process from concept introduction and technological exploration to policy promotion and large-scale development. Since 2016, national policies have vigorously promoted it, and currently, it accounts for about 7% of newly built prefabricated buildings in China.

Application Cases: In China, it has been applied to projects such as Baotou Wanjun Metropolis and Hangzhou Qianjiang Century City talent-specific housing, including affordable housing and commercial housing projects.

Market Situation: There is significant room for improvement in the market penetration of steel structure housing in China. It is an important representative of building 'good houses' and an important carrier for promoting the transformation and upgrading of the construction industry. Chinese-made prefabricated houses are also popular overseas.
