Roof Tiling for Prefabricated Slab Houses

Admin September 18, 2026

Prefabricated slab houses can be roofed with tiles, and the common types of roof tiling and key points are as follows:

Ordinary Tiles

Prefabricated slabs are often used as the base structure for the roofs of rural self-built houses with tiled roofs. During construction, prefabricated slabs are first laid on the load-bearing walls to form a horizontal support surface, and then the roof frame is built and covered with tiles. Advantages: Low cost. The unit price of prefabricated slabs usually does not exceed 100 yuan per piece, and the overall cost is about half of that of a cast-in-place roof. High construction efficiency. They can be directly hoisted and spliced without on-site pouring or long-term curing, which can shorten the construction period. Limitations: Poor structural integrity. Their seismic resistance is weaker than that of cast-in-place structures. In earthquake-prone areas, they should be used with caution. The overall connection can be strengthened by adding structural columns and ring beams, or a cast-in-place roof can be chosen as an alternative. The slab joints are prone to water leakage. Cracks may occur at the joints due to settlement or thermal expansion and contraction, leading to leakage. A waterproof layer (such as asphalt or felt) can be laid at the slab joints, or a double waterproof barrier can be formed by covering with tiles. Limited thermal insulation performance. The thermal insulation effect of prefabricated slabs themselves is weaker than that of cast-in-place roofs, which may increase the indoor temperature in summer. The thermal insulation effect can be improved through a tiled roof, or a thermal insulation layer (such as extruded polystyrene board) can be added to make up for the deficiency.

Resin Tiles

It is feasible to install resin tiles on the roofs of prefabricated slab houses. Advantages: Lightweight. They weigh about 2.5 - 4 kilograms per square meter, imposing a relatively small structural load on the prefabricated slab houses. Good weather resistance. They have excellent ultraviolet resistance and a service life of 20 - 50 years. Strong waterproof performance. Their dense structure does not absorb water, and the surface has a lotus-leaf-like hydrophobic design, eliminating the risk of leakage. Good thermal insulation and sound insulation effects. They have a low thermal conductivity coefficient, effectively reducing the indoor temperature, and significant sound insulation effects. Installation Points: For base treatment, the roof of the prefabricated slab house should be flat and crack-free. If necessary, a waterproof layer treatment should be carried out. For the fixing method, it is recommended to use special screws for fixing, with a recommended spacing of no more than 660mm to ensure wind resistance. For joint treatment, special sealants or waterproof tapes should be used to prevent rainwater penetration.

Reinforced Concrete Tiled Roofs

To meet fire prevention or styling requirements, tiles can be laid on prefabricated reinforced concrete hollow slabs or cast-in-place slabs. Process Classification: One is to lay felt on the leveling layer and then fix the felt-pressing strips and tile-hanging strips with wooden wedges for tiling. The other is to directly apply waterproof cement mortar on the roof slab for tile laying, which is a common process in the construction of imitation ancient buildings. According to GB/T50855 - 2024 Standard for Quantity Calculation of Imitation Ancient Building Engineering, reinforced concrete tiled roofs are included in the national standard system, and this standard will be implemented from September 1, 2025.
