Portable Toilets for Highway Traffic Jams

Admin September 27, 2026

In the scenario of highway traffic jams, solutions for portable toilets mainly fall into two categories: portable folding toilets and integrated hidden toilets. You can choose the appropriate solution based on your travel needs.

I. Portable Folding Toilets: The Mainstream Choice for Emergency Scenarios

Applicable Scenarios: Used for emergencies during family self-driving trips or when traveling with young children or the elderly. For example, during the National Day holiday when there are highway traffic jams, children, due to their physiological development characteristics, cannot hold their urine for long periods. The folding toilet can be quickly unfolded into a stable toilet structure, equipped with disposable toilet bags, to solve urgent needs. According to data from the China Highway and Transportation Society, over 68% of long-distance car owners have encountered problems such as "not being able to find a toilet, long queues, and poor hygiene." Such products can effectively alleviate these dilemmas.
Product Features:

  • Portability: After folding, it is small in size (similar to a small stool) and can be stuffed into the corners of the trunk, under the seats, or under the passenger-side floor mat, taking up no extra space.
  • Affordable Price: Consumer-grade products range in price from 36 yuan to 89 yuan. The materials are mostly PP plastic or aluminum alloy frames + Oxford cloth, with a load-bearing capacity of over 120 kg, meeting the needs of adults.
  • Usage Pain Points: Manual storage and cleaning are required, which is troublesome. It occupies space in the car for a long time, and some users report that "it is闲置 (left unused) after one use."
Demand Matching Suggestions: High-frequency long-distance users (such as those driving more than 10,000 kilometers per year) or special groups (traveling with young children, the elderly, or women traveling alone) can use it as an emergency solution. Urban commuters or short-distance users do not need to be equipped with it to avoid equipment idleness.

II. Integrated Hidden Toilets: A Future Solution in Technological Exploration

Technical Solution: Proposed by Seres Automotive, the toilet is hidden under the seat through a sliding rail assembly. When in use, it is pulled out to form a complete toilet, equipped with functions such as a sealed feces collection box and exhaust odor removal. Theoretically, it can solve the problem of using the toilet during long-distance traffic jams and in remote areas.
Patent Progress: It was authorized by the National Intellectual Property Administration in April 2026 (Patent No. CN224104011U), but it has not yet been mass-produced, and its technical reliability needs further verification.
Controversial Points:

  • Supporters: Believe that it is a rigid need for the elderly with frequent urination, young children, and privacy-sensitive women, and can improve the travel experience.
  • Opponents: Question the technical reliability of odor isolation and pipe sealing, and are concerned about increased vehicle purchase costs, occupation of car space, and social embarrassment (such as the impact of car odors on passenger experience).
Current Situation Summary: At present, integrated toilets have not yet entered the market. The mainstream solution is still portable toilets. Their applicability needs to be evaluated after mass production and verification.
