Portable Toilet

Admin September 20, 2026

A portable toilet is a facility that can be moved as a whole and provides toilet services to the public, featuring mobility, modularity, and ease of transportation.

I. Basic Composition Portable toilets are generally composed of fecal sewage storage tanks (or disposal units), floor slabs, sanitary fixtures, walls, washing equipment, water tanks, roofs, and mobile devices. Their core functional modules include an excreta collection system (such as fecal storage tanks and dry packing units), a water supply system (water tanks and faucets), and a structural support system (walls and roofs). Some high-end models are also equipped with solar power supply or recycled water treatment devices.

II. Development History Early portable toilets were made of materials like wood, which had issues such as simple construction and easy absorption of odors. With technological advancements, they gradually evolved to use corrosion-resistant and easy-to-clean composite materials like fiberglass-reinforced plastic and polyethylene. For example, modern single-structure portable toilets often use lightweight fiberglass-reinforced plastic shells, ensuring structural strength while facilitating lifting and transportation.

III. Classification Methods

  1. By structural form: They are divided into single-structure (independent units) and composite-structure (combination of multiple functional modules).
  2. By mobility method: They include lifting and handling types (requiring lifting equipment) and powered towing types (with their own power or towable by vehicles).
  3. By sewage treatment method:
    • Flush type: Relies on water tank supply for flushing and requires regular cleaning of the sewage tank.
    • Waterless suction type: Uses a vacuum pump to suction excreta, suitable for water-scarce scenarios.
    • Recycled water flush type: Equipped with a sewage treatment system to achieve water resource recycling.
    • Dry packing type: Uses biodegradable bags to collect excreta, requiring no water source and suitable for field operations.

IV. Application Scenarios Portable toilets originated to meet temporary and phased needs, such as large-scale events, construction sites, and disaster relief. In cities, governments deploy them in areas where fixed public toilet construction is difficult to compensate for insufficient public toilet numbers or unreasonable layouts. For example, in 2023, the Lanzhou Yellow River Scenic Area improved tourist toilet convenience by installing portable toilets.

V. Homemade Cases In addition to standardized products, there are also cases of homemade portable toilets using materials like buckets and water storage tanks in the folk sector. For example, some people create entrances and exits by installing wooden boards and universal wheels, cutting buckets, and connecting drainage pipes and floor drains, ultimately assembling a fully functional portable toilet. Although such designs are low-cost, attention should be paid to material durability and hygiene standards.
